Lori Vann, a licensed professional counselor supervisor, opened her first private practice in 2008. She named the practice Lori Vann Counseling. As the business grew, she changed the name to Vann & Associates. In November 2023, she moved from Louisville to Coppell and changed the name to Vann Wellness Group.
“This was a better reflection of the vision for holistic care I’ve had for the past few years,” she said. “The mind and body are interconnected, and there are many different ways to reach a client’s goals.”
The Big Picture
The business offers individual, family and group counselling, individual and group coaching, as well as holistic care options.
Vann offers counseling and coaching services and works with clients ages 12 to 60. Other staff members include counselors, coaches, nutritionists and holistic practitioners.
detail
Vann said individual counseling is the service with the highest demand. Clients come in for a variety of reasons, including work stress, marriage, divorce and major trauma. She sees many clients who fall into the category of non-suicidal self-harm.
“This is a bigger problem than people realise,” Vann said. “It’s not just a teenager thing, it starts in primary school. There are adults who self-harm too. I’ve documented 32 forms of self-harm, but we know there are many more.”
She said that while cutting is commonly thought of when people think of self-harm, there are many other behaviours, including scratching, hitting, burning, hair pulling, picking at nails and biting the lips or cheeks.
“It’s not an eating disorder, but sometimes people intentionally starve themselves as a way to feel hungry,” she said.
approach
A typical session will vary depending on the practitioner within the clinic. Vann says most new client visits are 75 minutes long, with follow-up sessions lasting around 55 minutes. Play therapy may be split into 30 minutes of play therapy with the child and the remaining time spent with the child and parent.
Vann said her “tree model” protocol applies to multiple behaviors.
“It’s important to get to the root cause,” Van says. “The root cause is the problem. The behavior is visible and it catches our attention. If you don’t get to the root cause that caused the behavior, it becomes like playing whack-a-mole and you just take on another behavior to address it.”
what else?
The clinic also offers holistic treatments such as sound baths and trauma-informed yoga.
“These are not faith-based,” Vann said. “Religion is not endorsed by these holistic healing options.”
However, upon request, we provide professional counselling based on Christian principles.
Notable Quotes
Vann said that while the location and size of the clinic has changed over time, he has stuck to his core values.
“I believe people have a right to professional, ethical and non-judgmental services,” she said. “I don’t think mental health should be a luxury item. At the end of the day, we’re here to serve the community in every way we can.”
