A new Vitamin D eye drop has been launched in India to treat dry eye syndrome, a common eye ailment. Launched by ENTOD Pharmaceuticals, the new formulation provides targeted relief to people suffering from dry eyes and marks a breakthrough in eye health, the company said in a statement.
Vitamin D3 is currently incorporated into some of ENTOD Pharmaceutical’s select lubricant eye drop brands prescribed by ophthalmologists to treat dry eye, according to the company.
Dry eye syndrome is a common condition characterized by discomfort, irritation and even vision problems. The main causes of dry eyes are environmental factors, vitamin deficiencies, poor blinking habits, contact lenses, digital devices, smoking and refractive surgery.
“As a pharmaceutical company committed to improving healthcare outcomes, we recognized the urgent need for an effective solution to address dry eye syndrome. By harnessing the power of Vitamin D3 and other key ingredients, we aim to provide effective relief to those suffering from dry eye, ultimately improving their quality of life.”
Regulates corneal wound healing. Lubricating eye drops rich in Vitamin D3 are available only through medical treatment.
According to Dr Ganesh Kalyanshetty, cataract and cornea surgeon at KMC Eye and Skin Hospital, Navi Mumbai, vitamin D deficiency is increasingly being recognised as a major cause of various eye diseases, including dry eye syndrome.
“Deficiency of Vitamin D not only leads to poor tear production but also compromises the health of the ocular surface making people more susceptible to discomfort and vision problems. The launch of Vitamin D3 enriched lubricating eye drops by ENTOD Pharmaceuticals marks a significant moment in addressing these issues. This advancement has the potential to improve the ocular health and overall wellness of countless people across the country,” said Dr. Kalyan Shetty.
Vitamin D3 deficiency is a widespread problem, especially in areas with little exposure to sunlight, such as India.
According to a report released in May 2020, around 76% of Indians suffer from vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency, with the prevalence highest among young adults.
Recognizing the important role that Vitamin D plays in maintaining overall health, ENTOD said it aims to address this pressing issue through its innovative eye care solutions.
