Wall Pilates is easier to tackle than traditional exercise, but is it effective?

Use just a wall to improve your posture, strengthen your muscles, and improve your balance.
That’s the promise of wall Pilates, the new fitness trend. It’s easy to be skeptical of the instructional videos on social media that have recently exploded in popularity.
“It’s become more prevalent on TikTok,” says certified Pilates instructor Kayla Brugger, who noticed a demand for wall Pilates content and started incorporating it into her YouTube channel and studio, Pilates Body by Kayla.
“Who doesn’t have access to a wall?” Bulger said.
Wall Pilates makes traditional Pilates more accessible, without the need for expensive equipment such as the Reformer.
Bulger said if done correctly, the movement mimics the smooth slide of a reformer, with presses and lifts coming from the wall.
While the internet is full of Pilates challenges, Bulger filmed her own version and uploaded it for free online.
“I have seven days, 10 days, 21 days, so I was going to fill in those gaps with this 28-day wall Pilates challenge,” Bulger said.
Not only is wall Pilates cost-effective, but it also incorporates advanced movements, making it easier and safer for beginners.
“The weight of your legs arches your back, making it really hard to engage your deep abdominal muscles,” Bulger says. “The wall limits your range of motion.”
Bulger recommends finding instructional videos online from certified instructors, and watching them carefully before attempting new moves can help minimize the risk of straining your neck and shoulders, she says.
“With any exercise, it’s possible to do it wrong,” Bulger says.
That’s why Britney Magdal started following Bulger’s videos.
“I started probably about a month ago,” Magdal said, “participating in Kayla’s 21-day challenge.”
A former gymnast, Magdal is used to exercising but wanted an easier workout that she could do at home.
“I still feel stronger after 10 days,” Magdal said. “I can see my form is sharper and I’m stronger.”
