Detroit – A shooting has occurred on Detroit’s east side, resulting in a heavy police presence.
The shooting happened Monday (May 27) in the 11100 block of Beaconsfield Street, just south of Moran Avenue.
Authorities have said the shooting was a major police incident, but neighbors and family members said it could have happened inside the home and resulted in fatalities.
Police said a woman who lives in the home with her adult son was visiting for Memorial Day.
Authorities said the man had been suffering from mental illness and had been in a manic state for the past seven days, and his mother had been trying to get him some kind of treatment before Monday’s shooting.
It has not been revealed exactly what happened on Monday that led him to have a mental breakdown.
Authorities have not said whether police shot the man or if he shot his family member, only that Local 4 was told a shooting occurred and two people were taken to a Metro Detroit hospital.
“He actually came to visit,” Keechia Tompkins said. “She tried to hold him back and calm him down and go to the hospital, but he didn’t want to go. I don’t know what happened from there. I went to her this morning to get coffee and she didn’t answer. I guess she was busy, but she ended up calling me and saying she was OK. Then she called me, so I’m still trying to figure it out myself.”
Detroit Police Chief James White has not provided an official account of what happened at the scene, but it appears a police-involved shooting occurred as of 6 p.m.
