Including certain vitamins in your diet can help protect your eyes and keep them healthy during heatwaves. Here are five vitamins that are essential for maintaining good vision and protecting your eyes from the harmful effects of heat and UV rays.

Vitamins essential for eye health in the heatwave

  1. Vitamin A: Vitamin A is essential for maintaining a healthy cornea. It also contributes to the production of rhodopsin, which helps improve vision in low light. Deficiency of Vitamin A can lead to serious complications such as night blindness and other vision disorders. Carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and kale are rich sources of Vitamin A, which are beneficial for overall health.
  2. Vitamin E: Vitamin E protects the eyes from free radical damage and oxidative stress and helps slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Almonds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts and spinach are important sources of Vitamin E.
  3. Vitamin B2: Riboflavin is essential for reducing the risk of cataracts and maintaining overall eye health by supporting the proper functioning of the cornea and retina. Dairy products, eggs, lean meat and green leafy vegetables are essential for eye health and are rich sources of Vitamin B2.
  4. Vitamin D: Vitamin D reduces the risk of macular degeneration and supports overall eye health. Adequate amounts of Vitamin D are essential for reducing inflammation and maintaining retinal health. Oily fish, fortified dairy products and exposure to sunlight are all essential for Vitamin D.
  5. Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C helps prevent eye damage caused by UV rays and supports healthy blood vessels in the eyes. It may also help reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Oranges, grapefruit and strawberries are good sources of Vitamin C.
