BHOPAL: A ten-day advanced meditation programme concluded at Bhopal Central Jail on Sunday. 467 inmates from five central and one circular jails enthusiastically participated. The inmates expressed their gratitude and said that if they had taken the programme earlier, they might not have been in the situation they are in now. Many of them were emotional while narrating their experiences. The course was conducted by senior meditation teachers Sunil Jain and Shraddha Singh Tamkar, who have experience in guiding inmates in meditation. They used simple yet effective techniques to help the participants understand the benefits of meditation and how it can transform their lives. Throughout the programme, the teachers regularly followed up with the participants to ensure that they were practising meditation regularly and dealing with the challenges they faced. State Teacher Coordinator Himanshi Gupta expressed her gratitude to the Prisons Department and all the Prison Programme District Coordinators and teachers. The inmates said that the programme helped them manage their stress, anxiety and anger issues. They felt more relaxed and focused after practising meditation regularly. Some of them expressed a desire to continue meditating after their release. The program also had a positive impact on prison staff. They noticed a significant change in the behavior of the prisoners who participated in the program. They said that the prisoners became more disciplined, cooperative, and respectful towards staff and other prisoners. Advanced meditation programs have proven to be an effective tool in the rehabilitation of prisoners. It could transform their lives and help them become productive members of society. The program has benefited the prisoners and has had a positive impact on their families and the community at large. The program could be replicated in other prisons across the country and could play a major role in the rehabilitation of prisoners.
