Does your child attend a Jeff Davis Parish school?
If so, you may be eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch meal kits every week this summer.
Jeff Davis Parish Schools announced in a Facebook post that it plans to provide free meals from June 17 to July 22 through its summer lunch program.
I asked Christopher Lennette, a Jennings family and father of three, what he thought about the program.
It’s an asset to the community, he said.
“It’s going to help a lot of parents,” Lenette said. “It’s a really good thing. I know a lot of parents who need it.”
Parents can choose curbside pickup or pick up their meal kits from the following locations:
Elton High School
Fenton Elementary School
Hathaway High School
Jennings High School
Lake Arthur Elementary School
Lacassine High School
Welsh High School
I reached out to Haley Kratzer, a math teacher at Jennings Elementary, for comment.
As an educator and mother of two, she said she understands firsthand how expensive groceries can be.
As a result, she is grateful for the partnership between Title 1, the federal aid initiative that makes this nutrition program possible, and Jeff Davis Parish.
“I actually enrolled my kids [FREE weekly meal kits]”I have two kids myself, and whenever they were in the program during COVID, there was so much good stuff on offer,” Kratzer said.
Kratzer said the meal kits include items like popsicles, cartons of milk, granola bars and meals that can be quickly heated in the microwave.
