Every person needs a sense of personal identity and control, dignity, purposeful living and belonging for mental wellbeing, but as we age, this becomes a challenge which, combined with declining physical health, loss of independence and social isolation, can have a further detrimental impact on emotional wellbeing. By 2026, more than 180 million people in India will be aged 60 and above, of whom, around one in five will suffer from mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and cognitive decline.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Achal Bhagat, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals and Chairman, Sarthak, said, “India’s mental healthcare system is not adequately prepared to accommodate the growing number of people needing support. Hence, the impact of the mental health of older adults is felt by their loved ones as well, especially their children who are often caregivers. However, with some small lifestyle changes, older adults and their loved ones can boost their mental wellbeing and improve their overall quality of life.”

  1. Stay connected: Loneliness and social isolation can have a significant impact on the mental health of older people, especially. Encouraging older people to get involved in community activities, join support groups and visit with family and friends can help foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
  2. Participate in meaningful activities: Engaging in a hobby, learning a new skill or volunteering can provide a sense of accomplishment and cognitive stimulation. It can be helpful to identify activities that seniors will enjoy, such as gardening, reading, crafts or attending educational courses or workshops.
  3. Stay physically active: Regular exercise has many mental health benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood and enhancing cognitive function. Engage in low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming or gentle yoga, as recommended by a healthcare professional.
  4. Maintain a balanced diet: A nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein has a positive impact on mental health. As we age, we also lose muscle mass. A healthy diet and exercise can help us stay active. Encourage seniors and their caregivers to plan and prepare healthy meals together, making it a social and enjoyable experience.
  5. Practice mindfulness and relaxation: Techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, and gentle stretching can help reduce stress and anxiety.
  6. Seek professional help: If sadness, anxiety, forgetfulness, or other mental health concerns persist, it is essential to seek professional help from a licensed mental health professional. Early intervention and appropriate treatment can make a big difference in managing mental health issues.

Sama Begg, Chief Product Officer at Emoha, said: “In today’s fast-paced world, many families juggle multiple responsibilities. Children eager to pursue careers often have to juggle the dual roles of working and caring for elderly parents. This situation can be an emotional tightrope walk, with concerns about the wellbeing of both generations. Supporting career aspirations is important, but prioritising the mental health of children and their parents is essential to their long-term happiness and success. By providing a support system that addresses the needs of both working adults and elderly parents, aged care services can reduce stress and create a more balanced and fulfilling journey for the whole family. This allows adult children to focus on work, with the peace of mind knowing their parents are receiving quality care and remain engaged in their lives.”

She highlighted the challenges and support for older people.

  • Isolation and loneliness: Social connections are essential for mental health. Older adults may experience isolation due to retirement, limited mobility, or the death of a loved one. Caregivers provide companionship, engage in conversation, and facilitate social interaction, reducing feelings of loneliness and lifting mood.
  • Dementia and cognitive decline: Dementia can be a cause for anxiety for older people. Trained carers understand the stages of dementia and can provide support through structured routines and engaging activities that promote cognitive stimulation. This not only helps to maintain cognitive function but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
  • Maintaining activity levels: Staying active is important for both physical and mental health. Aged care can help seniors with everyday tasks, leaving them time for hobbies, exercise classes and outings. This promotes a sense of independence and control over their lives, which can lead to improved mental health.

Support for adult children

“Caring for an elderly parent can be a stressful experience for adult children. Balancing work, family responsibilities and the needs of the elderly can lead to guilt, anxiety and even resentment,” said Sama Beg. She recommended ways in which professional elder care support can provide a support system that benefits both generations.

  • Peace of mind: Caring for aging parents is a complex science that can be difficult to handle without expert support. Knowing that their loved one is receiving expert and specialized care will allow adult children to focus on their own lives and work without constant worry.
  • Reduce stress: Senior support services are personalised to ensure seniors receive the specific help they need, reducing the burden on adult children and allowing them to spend quality time with their parents with less stress and anxiety.
  • Open Communication: Aged caregivers maintain clear communication with families, provide regular updates and involve them in care decisions – this fosters trust and a sense of partnership, leading to a more positive caregiving experience.

Building a strong foundation for mental health

Aged care service providers can take a holistic approach to support the mental wellbeing of older people and their families. Sama Beig identifies key aspects of aged care services that promote positive mental wellbeing.

  • Personalized Care Plan: We create customized care plans to meet individual needs and foster a sense of control and purpose for seniors.
  • Meaningful Activities: Encourage seniors to participate in fun and stimulating activities, promoting cognitive function and social interaction.
  • Socialization and Connectivity: It promotes opportunities for social interaction and reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Care Coordination: We help coordinate care and services, from emergency support to doctor visits, lab tests, diagnostics and more.

Investing in aged care is an investment in the mental health of both generations. By providing specialised support, peer interaction and a stimulating environment, aged care enables older people to live fulfilling lives whilst reducing stress and anxiety for families.
