Memorial Day Strawberry Layer Cake
Jen Appleberry from Appleberry’s Attic joins us to share her recipe for Garbage Cake, an easy-to-make dessert that’s perfect for Memorial Day.
material: (Makes a regular size bowl or trifle bowl, can be doubled for larger groups or larger bowls)
1 box of vanilla or chocolate cake
1 quart heavy whipping cream
One 32-ounce jar of strawberry jam or one batch of homemade hot fudge
2 pounds of strawberries
Strawberry Layer Cake Recipe:
*First, bake a box cake in a 9×13 inch pan. You can bake a chocolate or vanilla box cake depending on your preference.
*If you’re making the chocolate version, make your homemade hot fudge while the cookies are baking (recipe below).
If you’re making a vanilla version, use pre-made or store-bought diluted strawberry jam.
- Next, make your homemade whipped cream (recipe below).
*While the blender is blending, dice the strawberries.
*Once you have removed the cake from the oven and allowed it to cool, take a trifle bowl or a regular bowl (preferably clear) and start layering the cake.
Garnish with crumbled cake, whipped cream, jam or chocolate, and diced strawberries. Repeat.

Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe:
* Place 1 quart of heavy cream in a KitchenAid stand mixer and begin beating with the whisk on medium speed. Add 1/4 cup powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
Whip until stiff peaks form, this may take 10-15 minutes.
Homemade Hot Fudge Recipe:
1 stick of butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
2/3 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
Mix together and cook on stovetop for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
Serve chilled for desserts, ice cream sundaes or as an accompaniment to cheesecake.
