I’m a dermatologist and I believe serums are “essential.”

Dermatologists reveal the skin-care staples they swear by to slow the signs of ageing.

Her favorite beauty regimen, she said, can stimulate collagen production and reduce fine lines.

Dr Laura Gaige is a UK based medical aesthetician with experience in dentistry, injectables and laser aesthetics.

She spoke to the US Sun about her expert advice for maintaining a youthful appearance.

Skin savior

Each ingredient that Dr. Gaige “personally” trusts has been scientifically proven to reduce the signs of aging.

“As a dermatologist, I often recommend prescription-grade retinoids, which have unparalleled potency in stimulating collagen synthesis, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promoting skin renewal,” she says.

“Plus, a Vitamin C serum is essential as it is a powerful antioxidant that neutralises free radicals and brightens the complexion.

“I also recommend a hyaluronic acid-based moisturizer, which helps hydrate the skin and improves overall skin texture.”

She said it’s important to choose products sold by reputable brands as they have been tested for safety and effectiveness.

“If you’re targeting fine lines and wrinkles, I recommend taking a multi-pronged approach that combines retinoids, peptides and growth factors,” she said.

I’ve tried all kinds of Vitamin C serums and this one I bought in Korea is my favorite, it sells for $15.68 on Amazon.

“The peptide-rich formula aids in collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles over time.”

“Growth factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) play a vital role in skin renewal and repair, visibly reducing the signs of aging.

“Combination therapies tailored to individual skin concerns will provide optimal results.”

Rest and rejuvenation

Dr Gaige said that for best results, skin care should be combined with lifestyle changes.

“Emphasis on a holistic approach that encompasses diet, exercise, stress management and sleep hygiene,” she said.

“Eat a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and collagen-boosting foods like fish, fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Prioritize dermatologist-recommended, evidence-based skin care to protect your skin’s health and achieve lasting results.

“Regular exercise not only increases blood circulation and provides the skin with essential nutrients, it also boosts collagen production, improving skin elasticity and firmness.”

Reducing stress can help reduce the harmful effects of cortisol on the skin, minimizing inflammation and premature aging, she said.

Some of her recommendations include meditation, yoga and deep breathing exercises.

“Make quality sleep a priority as it promotes cell repair and regeneration, and is important for maintaining youthful looking skin,” she adds.

Quick Fix

Dr Gaige advised caution when researching skin care trends that are gaining popularity on social media.

“DIY remedies and non-traditional treatments touted as miracle solutions often lack scientific validation and may make skin problems worse,” she said.

“For example, lemon juice, baking soda and toothpaste can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier and lead to irritation and sensitivity.

“Prioritize dermatologist-recommended, evidence-based skin care to protect your skin’s health and get lasting results.”

Should I apply Vitamin C to my skin?

Topical Vitamin C has a variety of benefits for the skin, including moisturizing, reducing redness, and reducing pigmentation.

According to Healthline, it also helps boost collagen production and reduce sun damage.

Studies show it is safe for most skin types, but concentrations above 20% can cause irritation.

Experts recommend doing a patch test on a small area of skin and waiting 24 hours to check for any side effects before applying it to your face.

Discontinue use of topical vitamin C if you experience symptoms such as a rash, redness, or hives.

Mindful Makeup

Dr Gaige said makeup could be used to enhance skin’s radiance and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on aging skin.

“For a youthful glow, choose a lightweight, hydrating foundation or a tinted moisturizer with luminous pigments,” she said.

“Cream-based blushers and highlighters give a dewy finish without settling into creases, while satin or shimmer eyeshadows add dimension and vibrancy to the eyes.

“Avoid heavy powders and matte finishes that can dry out and accentuate texture, and instead opt for sheer, buildable formulas that give a soft-focus effect.”

Key ingredients to look out for include hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which plump and smooth the surface of skin, she said.

BB creams that contain “light-reflecting particles” can be used in place of foundation.

“Achieving youthful, radiant skin requires a holistic approach that includes lifestyle changes, scientifically proven skin care products and careful makeup techniques tailored to your individual needs,” she said.

“By prioritizing evidence-based practices and eschewing quick tricks, you can effectively combat the signs of aging and cultivate timeless skin that exudes confidence and vitality.”
