Men often wander through a maze of misunderstandings and reluctance when dealing with health concerns. Prioritizing men’s health is also important at the individual level, as individual well-being intersects with broader constructs of community health.
To shed light on this often overlooked aspect of health care, South County Health urologists Arnold Sarazen, MD, John Heffernan, MD, and Caitlin Johnson, MD, will discuss the importance of testing and the latest advancements in urological care.

The importance of proactive health
Dr. Sarazen explains, “When men actively monitor and manage their health, they not only improve their own quality of life, but they also contribute to the well-being of their families and communities. Prevention and early detection are key to reducing the impact of a variety of diseases, including prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).”
The important role of screenings
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Early detection relies on regular screening, including a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test.
Dr. Johnson reminds his patients every day that “detecting prostate cancer in its early stages can greatly improve treatment outcomes and save lives.” Men are encouraged to discuss an appropriate testing schedule with their health care provider, especially if they have risk factors such as family history. ”

Understanding benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that commonly affects men as they age. It can cause bothersome urinary symptoms, such as frequent urination, a weak urine stream, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
“It is paramount that we help patients feel empowered to seek treatment for their BPH. Although BPH is not life-threatening, it can have a significant impact on daily life. We are here to offer support, guidance and advanced treatments, including aquablation therapy, to enable patients to regain their confidence and quality of life,” says Dr Heffernan.
Aquablation Therapy Revolutionizes Treatment
South County Health recently introduced Aquablation Therapy, a groundbreaking, minimally invasive treatment for enlarged prostate. This advanced treatment harnesses the power of water delivered with robotic precision to provide long-lasting relief without compromising sexual function or incontinence.
“This innovative treatment not only provides long-term relief from bothersome urinary incontinence symptoms, but also preserves sexual function and continence,” explains Dr. Johnson. “It is extremely rewarding to witness the improvements in quality of life that patients experience after undergoing Aquablation Therapy. We are proud to be at the forefront of urological innovation and to provide access to advanced treatments that make a meaningful difference in the lives of our local communities.”
What can patients expect?
“Aquablation therapy is performed under anesthesia in South County Hospital’s operating room. The procedure typically takes about an hour and patients spend the night in a private room in our five-star, award-winning inpatient unit,” Dr. Sarazen said.
