Bloating is an unpleasant sensation that many of us experience from time to time. It is often caused by a buildup of gas in the digestive system, which can lead to discomfort, pain and abdominal distension. While modern medicine offers a variety of treatments, the ancient art of Ayurveda offers a natural, holistic solution. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, harnesses the healing properties of herbs to promote digestive health. Here are five Ayurvedic herbs known for their ability to reduce bloating and support overall digestive health (Image: Canva)

Ginger: Ginger is known to help with digestive issues, including bloating. Ginger’s active ingredients, gingerol and shogaol, have powerful anti-inflammatory and carminative properties that reduce gas and ease digestion. Ginger stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, which improves the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients. To use ginger for bloating, you can chew on slices of ginger, brew ginger tea, or incorporate it into your diet (Image: Canva)

Fennel seeds: Fennel seeds have been traditionally used in Ayurveda to combat bloating and other digestive disorders. The seeds contain anethole, a compound that relaxes gastrointestinal muscles, thereby reducing cramps and gas production. Fennel seeds also have antibacterial properties and can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria. Consuming fennel seeds after meals can aid digestion and prevent bloating. You can chew the seeds directly, make fennel tea, or use them as a spice in cooking (Image: Canva)

Asafoetida: Asafoetida, commonly known as hing in Indian cuisine, is a powerful Ayurvedic remedy for bloating and gas. This resinous gum has strong antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve flatulence and indigestion. Asafoetida works by reducing intestinal muscular contractions, helping to expel trapped gas. It can be added in small amounts to curries and lentil dishes or dissolved in warm water and consumed as a remedy (Image: Canva)

peppermint: Peppermint is another herb with great digestive health benefits. The menthol in peppermint has a relaxing effect on the muscles in your digestive tract, which can help reduce bloating and discomfort. It also has carminative properties that help expel gas from the intestines. Drinking peppermint tea or using peppermint oil capsules can provide instant relief from bloating. Peppermint tea can be made by steeping fresh or dried leaves in boiling water for a few minutes (Image Canva)

Triphala: Triphala is a cherished Ayurvedic formula made from three fruits: Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). This herbal blend is known for its ability to support digestive health and regularity. Triphala acts as a mild laxative, cleansing the digestive system and reducing bloating. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, promoting overall intestinal health. Triphala can be taken as a powder mixed with warm water or in tablet form. (Image: Canva)
