Cannes audience embraced David Cronenberg’s cold drama with respect shroudsThe latest work from the king of Canadian horror.
Cronenberg was on the Croisette for the film’s premiere on Monday, along with cast members Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, Sandrine Holt and Elizabeth Saunders. Cronenberg walked the red carpet wearing 1990s-style plastic sunglasses with wraparound white edges.

The film received applause for three and a half minutes, and ended with Cronenberg taking the microphone to thank the audience. The director explained that it was the first time he had seen the film with an audience, adding, “And it turned out to be something completely different.”
Its reception was quite muted, perhaps in keeping with the film’s themes of grief and death. The connection to the director’s own experiences is made clear by Cassel’s character, Karsh, whose cropped gray hair is directly modeled on Cronenberg himself.
