“In my experience, what kids like more than chocolate cake is Huge Chocolate cake,” Garten says in the video. (And so do I!) She uses flour and “really thick” cocoa powder, among other dry ingredients, and sifts them together into a medium mixing bowl. Next, she mixes things in an electric blender, including room-temperature butter, which she says is important for a “light and fluffy cake.”
Garten adds a few more ingredients to the cake batter, including vanilla, buttermilk, and sour cream (to keep the cake “moist”). The recipe also uses freshly brewed coffee. She mixed the dry and wet ingredients together with an electric mixer and commented that “the whole kitchen already smells like chocolate.” That alone is worth making the recipe!
Pour the batter into a half-sheet pan and use a spatula to spread it evenly before baking. While it’s baking in the oven, she prepares an “easy” frosting using semisweet chocolate chips, butter, and other ingredients. It looks very creamy and delicious when spread on a cooled cake. Chocolate lovers, this is for us!
Since this cake is for a children’s party, Garten suggests providing different types of candy and letting the little ones decorate the top. You can sprinkle it with furikake or just eat it as is.
