Dr. Leanne Redman has been named the new director of Pennington Biomedical’s Nutritional Obesity Research Center (NORC). On May 1, Dr. Redman took over the role from Dr. Eric Ravushin, who served as director for 19 years. NORC is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health.
Pennington Biomedical/Louisiana NORC is one of 11 across the country, including centers at Harvard University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Washington University in St. Louis. It will help scientists across the state conduct new ongoing research on nutrition and understand metabolic health. Scientists work on projects ranging from cells to clinical trials to community-based programs. Additionally, NORC is committed to training the next generation of nutrition and obesity researchers. We provide seed funding to innovative ideas as part of our annual pilot and feasibility program.
Pennington Biomedical’s NORC operates on five-year grant cycles, and the first successful grant cycle began in 2005 with an application written by Dr. Ravussin and Dr. Donna Ryan, Pennington Biomedical Professor Emeritus. As the fourth cycle draws to a close, Dr. Redman will leave his role as Deputy Director of NORC and take on a new leadership position, leading the team towards his further five-year renewal. .
“I am humbled that after a competitive process, my colleagues selected me for this role and trusted me to ensure that Dr. Ravushin’s legacy of exponentially expanding nutrition research in Louisiana continues for many years to come. I’m honored,” the doctor said. Ms. Redman is Associate Executive Director of Scientific Education and Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Women’s Health at Pennington Biomedical. “To date, our Pennington Biomedical/NORC of Louisiana has funded 75 pilot and feasibility study grants, and NIDDK recognizes these results as proof of NORC’s success. Our goal is to better understand the roots of obesity and its associated diseases. to translate discoveries into impactful clinical trials and new public health initiatives that improve health and save lives. ”
NORC, based at Pennington Biomedical Sciences, has more than 130 members and accesses resources in three scientific cores: human phenotyping, molecular mechanisms, and animal models and phenotyping. These three research cores have created research teams to address key questions and increased the amount of nutritional research conducted in Louisiana.
“After promoting NORC’s new program director nationally, the center’s leadership quickly realized that they didn’t have to go far to find great talent in nutrition and obesity science,” Rausin said. said the doctor. “We immediately agreed that Dr. Leanne Redman was the ideal leader for this prestigious center. We look forward to her continued leadership as NORC. She can feel reassured that she can always rely on us for support and cooperation.” ”
Dr. Redman will be one of only three female directors at NORC locations nationwide and, once established in the director role, will serve as overall lead when the center submits its renewal grant application in summer 2025. I will be in charge as a researcher. She leads NORC through continued support for Nutrition for Precision Health research supported by All of US, NIH’s historic initiative to collect and study data from more than 1 million people living in the United States. Masu.
“Dr. Redman takes on this leadership role with clear vision and the support of his colleagues at Pennington Biomedical,” said Dr. John Kirwan, executive director of Pennington Biomedical. “NORC plays a central role in providing resources and infrastructure for translational, interdisciplinary nutrition and obesity research in Louisiana, focusing on the root causes of obesity-related diseases and their treatment and prevention. We have our full support and confidence in Dr. Redman as she becomes the new NORC Director and leads the Center to new heights.”
