(ABC 6 News) – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Austin advocates took part in a march to raise awareness Saturday.
The group of about 30 to 40 people who participated in the march is known as The Bridge, a community mental health drop-in center and advocacy group.
The march itself was part of the local Mental Health Advisory Committee’s efforts to raise the visibility and voice of people suffering from mental illness.
Bridge’s mission is to make an impact through connection.
Courtney Ring, manager of The Bridge, said this year has seen a huge impact on the rise in the number of young people suffering from mental illness post-COVID-19.
She continued: To create a place where people can feel safe. ”
Bruce Nemitz, a member of the Austin Mental Health Advisory Board, said, “Things have gotten better over the last few years as more people and celebrities have come forward to say they have mental illness.”
The Bridge is a drop-in service that provides a friendly environment to connect individuals who are struggling to find the structural help they need.
