California is considering banning the sale of anti-aging skin care products to children under 13.
Because, as we all know, if something is questionable or ridiculous, it is the government’s job to stop it with taxpayer funds.
Premise? Thanks to TikTok trends and social media influencers, young teenage girls are using anti-aging products — when they’re not eating or choking on Tide pods, of course. These products often contain ingredients such as retinol and hyaluronic acid, which can cause skin irritation in people with sensitive epidermis, especially young people. (Skin irritation refers to things like itching or temporary dermatitis, not irreversible skin damage or melanoma.)
AB 2491 requires preteens under the age of 13 to make sure that they are not using products made for women going through a midlife crisis by placing a label next to the product that indicates that the product is not intended for people under the age of 13. Companies will be required to take steps such as posting notices and online explanations stating that they are not covered by the law. 13, or requiring customers to show identification to purchase products that are readily available on drugstore shelves.
