Brands and retailers embrace wellness
Wellness products, especially those in the supplements, vitamins, and functional food and beverage sectors, have been a major focus for retailers over the past year, and for good reason.
Consumers are actively taking vitamins and supplements. They were the second most popular consumer packaged goods category purchased during Amazon’s October Prime Day in both 2023 and 2022.
Target believes 2024 is the year of wellness and has brought more than 1,000 wellness products to its shelves, including items exclusive to retail brands.
The brand is clearly targeting Gen Z, keenly aware that young people are willing to forego other luxuries in order to spend more money on wellness products.
Ghost, a supplement and sports nutrition brand, offers colorful, youth-centric packaging with flavors aimed at younger consumers such as Chips Ahoy!, Oreo, Nutter Butter, and Sour Patch Kids. The company also sells products to gamers that contain nootropics and other ingredients to boost focus and energy.
Introducing weight loss foods and supplements
There is also an emerging market of non-injectable weight loss options and products aimed at supporting people transitioning from Ozempic and other semaglutide products.

GNC has launched Total Lean GlucaTrim, an over-the-counter supplement that claims to support healthy blood sugar and insulin levels. This caffeine-free product contains berberine, a compound extracted from various plants and called “nature’s ozempic.”
Supergut, a prebiotic superfood brand, recently partnered with GNC to include the popular Gut Health GLP-1 Booster, a high-fiber prebiotic mix. Founded in 2022, the company aims to use fiber to naturally trigger the release of the GLP-1 hormone, which sends signals to the brain that slow digestion and elicit feelings of fullness.
