Equine nutrition, best practices from foal to racehorse, was featured in the third panel of the 2024 OwnerView Webinar Series on May 14th.

The conference is hosted by the Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Horse Owners and Producers Association, and hosted by the Bessemer Trust, Stoll Keenon Ogden and The Green Group. This panel was sponsored by his OCD Pellets.

The Q&A was sponsored by West Point Thoroughbreds, and attendees were able to ask questions through the Q&A link, which were answered at the end of the webinar.

The panel consisted of trainer Cherie DeVaux; Anthony Koch, Director of Sales and Marketing, Hallway Feed. Dr. Joe Pagan, Founder and President of Kentucky Equine Research. and Bradley Purcell, farm manager at Claiborne Farm. Gary Falter, Project Manager at OwnerView, served as moderator.

The webinar began with a discussion about feeding mares and foals and preventive care for horses through feeding.

“Horses tell you how your body is doing from the inside out,” Purcell said. “If you’re looking at a meaty, healthy horse, the nutrition is there. It’s kind of in the background. If you’re looking at a good-looking animal, you’re doing your job.” Become.”

When it comes to feeding late-term pregnant mares, Dr. Pagan emphasized the importance of mineral nutrition. “Final semester is a really important time,” he said. “70% of fetal growth occurs during the third trimester.”

The importance of water and hay intake was also discussed. Panelists agreed that anything that can be done to provide horses with more water is good for them. “Change that [water] “Frequent drinking is the key to promoting sobriety,” Koch said. “Balancing your electrolytes correctly and making sure you have a constant intake of salt will promote drinking.” Ta.

Regarding feeding racehorses coming to their trainers for the first time, Deveaux said, “When they come in, what they’re eating is closely monitored. If they’re not eating… , I might call the ranch and ask them to pick up a few bags of feed for their horses.” So that we can integrate the feed into our feeding program, into our hallway. ”
