SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And for some nonprofits, this month’s goal is to help as many people as possible struggle with mental health issues.
The Bossier City Boardwalk has large window displays highlighting helplines and resources for passersby. The Social Therapy Project is a nonprofit organization that helps people in need of mental health services by providing free or low-cost counseling services.
A shop window titled “When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade” can help many people who are struggling and provide a service they wouldn’t otherwise receive. The design of the public desk normalizes the topic of mental health issues and signals a call for help.
“I think having windows helps people understand that this is a public space and makes mental health not as mysterious and scary as people think it is. It’s interactive, and knowing you have a phone number and resources makes it easy to call and ask for help,” said Valencia Jones, founder of the Social Therapy Project. “So more people are saying, ‘Oh, I saw that store window. I want to get help.'” So just walking by shopping, my friend needs help, my cousin needs help. A steady increase in the number of people realizing that they need help, that a loved one needs help, or that I need help. ”
