Recurrent coughs in winter can be very difficult to deal with, as they greatly interfere with daily life. As colds become more common in the winter, it becomes necessary to find ways to reduce the symptoms. There’s no surefire cure for the common cold, but incorporating natural remedies into your diet may help reduce the discomfort associated with winter coughs.

garlic

Known for its powerful antioxidant properties, garlic can serve as a powerful ally in the fight against colds. Studies show that garlic supplements can significantly reduce the frequency of colds by up to 63%. Beyond its effect on colds, garlic has additional health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and helping prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Ginger

Ayurveda values ginger for its effectiveness in treating coughs and colds. Its active ingredient, gingerol, exhibits anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Research shows that ginger can act as a bronchodilator, relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways and reducing irritability, coughing, and shortness of breath. Ginger can be consumed in many forms, including herbal tea, freshly brewed juice, or chewed.

tulsi

Tulsi, an Ayurvedic herb, has been used in India for centuries for its diverse health benefits. Tulsi is an expectorant and helps clear mucus from the airways, making it effective for dry coughs. Additionally, its natural antibacterial properties help fight infections.

fruits and vegetables

Vitamin C may not be a panacea, but it plays a supporting role in strengthening the immune system. Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, lemons, kiwis, strawberries, broccoli, red peppers, Brussels sprouts, butternuts, cantaloupe, cauliflower, and tomatoes are good sources of vitamin C.

onion juice

Onions, a common kitchen ingredient, have therapeutic benefits that go beyond taste. Research shows that onion extract has anti-inflammatory properties and may relax the trachea and reduce cough spasms. In Ayurveda, onion juice mixed with honey is recognized as a treatment for dry cough.

honey

Research shows that honey can reduce persistent coughs and may be more effective than standard treatments in some cases. A spoonful of honey taken directly or added to a hot drink such as herbal tea can effectively suppress coughs and reduce the need for antibiotics.

hot fluid

Although research is limited, a 2008 study suggests that consuming liquids that are above room temperature may reduce symptoms of coughing, runny nose, and sneezing. Hot drinks such as clear soups, herbal teas, decaffeinated teas, warm water, and warm fruit juices provide instant relief from sore throats, chills, and fatigue.

Pumpkin seeds:

Rich in zinc, pumpkin seeds strengthen the function of white blood cells, which are important in fighting viruses such as the flu. Incorporate pumpkin seeds into your diet for a comforting crunch and immune system support.

turmeric

Turmeric, especially in the form of turmeric milk, is a popular home remedy in India. Curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen the immune system and stimulate antibody responses against infections. Adding black pepper to turmeric increases its therapeutic effect.

pineapple

Surprisingly, pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme with anti-inflammatory and mucolytic properties. Bromelain helps break down mucus and reduce inflammation, making pineapple an effective choice for cough relief.

banana berry smoothie

Banana Berry Smoothie combines the richness of bananas with antioxidant-rich berries like strawberries and blueberries. Packed with essential vitamins, this smoothie supports your immune system, reduces cough symptoms, and boosts your overall health.

Individual responses may vary when incorporating these natural remedies to relieve winter cough. If your symptoms persist or worsen, we recommend contacting your health care professional. Incorporating these natural elements into your diet can help strengthen your immune system and ease the discomfort associated with winter coughs.
