When summer barbecue season starts to heat up, I often pull out classic potluck recipes like baked beans and potato salad. But recently, I saw a sweet pea salad trending on social media and was intrigued. There are many variations of sweet pea salad made with peas, mayonnaise, and boiled eggs. Some add cubes of cheddar cheese, while others add a bite of chopped red onion to add flavor to summer salads.

What is sweet pea salad?

TikTok is full of sweet pea salad videos, the most popular of which is by Next Level Chef alum Brittany Camille, whose video about her mother’s sweet pea salad recipe has been viewed over 1.5 million times. has been done. Home Chef’s version of sweet pea salad is simple. Mix the canned peas, boiled eggs, mayonnaise, and spices and let sit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes until the flavors meld before serving.

The ingredients for sweet pea salad vary a bit, but Camille and many other TikTokers favor a particular brand of canned peas: Le Sueur. “I went out and bought some luxury goods.” [peas]” she said in the viral TikTok as she gathered ingredients and opened a can of Le Soul.

Peas perfect for sweet pea salad

What makes Le Sueur peas perfect for sweet pea salad? Jessica Hassapis, senior brand manager at Le Sueur, says the type of peas used is more important than the canning process. “Le Soul peas are the ‘early June variety’ peas, and the peas themselves are younger peas suited for a sweeter flavor and crunchy texture,” she tells Allrecipes. “The ‘younger’ the peas are, the less starch is formed and this is why they are tougher.”

Hassapis said the term “sweet pea” refers to the size and maturity of the pea and its flavor. “The term is a descriptor for actual pea varieties, referring to smaller, sweeter peas as opposed to more mature, larger peas,” she explains.

To make sweet pea salad at home, I followed TikTok’s advice and started with two cans of Le Soul sweet peas. I stuck pretty closely to Camille’s tried-and-true recipe, using mayonnaise and hard-boiled eggs, seasoned with black pepper, salt, and Cajun seasoning. I added cooked crumbled bacon to the mix for added protein.

material

  • 2 15 oz cans of sweet peas, drained (I used Le Sueur brand)

  • 6 boiled eggs (coarsely chopped)

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise

  • black pepper

  • salt

  • cajun seasoning

  • 1/4 cup cooked crumbled bacon

direction

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.

  2. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

After mixing the ingredients and letting them sit in the fridge for about an hour, I served the side dishes with grilled hot dogs, potato chips, and baked beans in my backyard cookout. The sweet pea salad was a new addition to our typical barbecue fare, but it felt like the perfect side dish and I’d love to make it again for my family and to bring to a summer potluck. I think.

What does sweet pea salad taste like?

The mayonnaise-based salad reminded me of potato salad, but the peas had just the right texture in place of the baked beans on the regular menu. In fact, sweet pea salad may be the perfect combination of creamy, cold potato salad and bacon-filled baked beans. This eliminates the need for those dishes and simplifies backyard dinners. After all, there’s nothing better than an easy, chilled summer recipe that checks a lot of boxes and pleases everyone on your dinner invite list.

I definitely want to make the sweet pea salad again. And you’ll be able to experiment with different flavors of the dish by changing both seasonings and additives. Next time, I’d like to season it with garlic powder, salt, and pepper, and add cubed cheese, bacon, and red onion for the perfect summer dish.
