Mumbai: Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha, the spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism based on his teachings. Buddhism attaches great importance to this festival.
Buddha Jayanti or Vesak falls on the full moon day (Vasak) in May. This day is celebrated as a day of triple blessings as his three important milestones in the life of Buddha, namely his birth at Lumbini, enlightenment at Bodhgaya and Mahapalli nirvana at Kushinagar all occur on this auspicious day. It is revered.
In addition to India, this festival is also celebrated in many other countries. On this day, people visit Buddhist temples and give alms to the poor.
Believers also meditate, fast, and recite Buddhist scriptures on this day.
Gautama Buddha’s life
Gautama Buddha, in addition to being a philosopher, was also a spiritual teacher, guru, and guide. Buddhism was founded by him and his followers have spread all over the world.
Gautama Buddha’s birth and death dates are unknown. Most historians place his life between 563 BC and AD 483.
Buddha is believed to have been born in Lumbini, Nepal.

According to Veda Panchan, Buddha Purnima will begin on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:47 pm and end on Thursday, May 23 at 7:22 pm. Therefore, Buddha Purnima will be observed on May 23, 2024.
Importance of Buddha Purnima
Buddha’s teachings included philosophy, spirituality, nonviolence, compassion, and ethics. Gautam Buddha attained Mahapali Nirvana at the age of 80 in Kushinagara, Uttar Pradesh. For Buddhists, Bodhgaya is the most important pilgrimage site associated with Gautama Buddha. His three other major pilgrimage sites are Kushinagar, Lumbini and Sarnath. Gautam Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and first preached in Sarnath.
