While the campaign revolves around drink recipes and Mental Health Awareness Month, Gonsalves’ involvement as a Cairo Nutrition user and mental health advocate was critical. Here, the influencer shares more about her experience using Kailo Nutrition, her journey towards mental health, and the importance of gut health.
WWD: What has your struggle with mental health been like?
Elie Gonsalves: One of the biggest challenges for me in my mid-twenties was losing my father. I lost his father to suicide. It was a very difficult time in my life to go through. I was her 25th year old. I lived in America. He was working in Los Angeles, a 14-hour flight away from his father and family. It was something I was able to overcome by taking care of my health and well-being. [and] my mental health.
WWD: What did wellness mean to you at the time?
for example: I wake up most mornings and train. I’m eating everything I should be eating. I’m taking supplements. I am in counseling, but at that point it was 3 times a week. Also, the really big challenge is that when my father died, I actually cut ties with his family, so I wasn’t just grieving his father’s death. I was also grieving the loss of the family dynamic that I had built all my life.
WWD: What role does chiro nutrition play in your physical and mental health routine?
for example: In fact, I was reminded of the importance of gut health and the connection between gut health and mental health. Two years ago, I went through a really stressful job. My gut health immediately started to deteriorate. Because of my chronic bloating, I ended up going to every doctor I could find and doing every test under the sun. In fact, I was having a lot of symptoms similar to genital cancer and was really struggling. Every doctor I went to said, “No, you’re perfectly healthy”…[My naturopath said,] “Let’s put together everything that’s going on in the gut.” And that’s where the problem came from. It affected my mental health, physical health, and skin. That was my encounter with Cairo. My naturopathic doctor said: “You should start taking this product. It will help repair your intestinal lining.”
WWD: How did you feel after using the product?
for example: Two years ago, when I started taking Cairo’s Feelwell, I noticed a big difference in my swelling. That was probably the thing I wanted fixed the most because the pain was so great. Then I started noticing what a difference it was making to my mental health. It eased my anxiety. It helped my depression.
WWD: If you’ve noticed these changes, we’re partnering with Kailo Nutrition this May to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month with Anxious Girl Elixir. How do you incorporate it into your daily life?
for example: I feel good as soon as I wake up in the morning, before I have any food or coffee. It sets the tone for my day. That sets the tone for the day regarding my gut health. It’s similar to how great you feel after taking a cold shower. In fact, it feels like a cold shower passes through your body and sets the tone for the day.
WWD: Besides Anxiety Girl Elixir, what other health habits can you live without?
for example: I love hitting the reset button. I love taking long baths, about 2 hours. This is a full reset. It will exfoliate the skin. Wear a face mask. Do a hair mask. Select “Feel Well” or “Sleep Well” depending on the time of day. Let’s laminate the eyebrows. It’s the perfect clean girl routine. I like to do it once a week and it’s a non-negotiable for me.
WWD: What is the significance of the campaign and “Anxious Girl Elixir”?
for example: I’ve always talked about mental health very openly.I’ve been very open about my father’s story. [and] My story about how I actually got over that loss. I think mental health is a bigger topic now than ever before. This is a bigger struggle than ever before, so we’re really becoming sensitive to the fact that a lot of people are actually going through it. I think our Anxious Girl Elixir is definitely the door to open that conversation in a respectful, light and fun way.
