BATON ROUGE – The nonprofit organization Conscious Moms held its third annual Mile2Moms 2-mile Fun Run at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge.
This group is dedicated to removing the stigma around maternal mental health.
The disorder is comprised of a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. In the United States, women of childbearing age account for the largest proportion of people with depression 15 of women diagnosed with a maternal mental health disorder receive treatment because it makes them feel like they are failing to raise their children less than %.
While the event was fun, the main priority was to bring the community together and let them know they are not alone.
“This is a legitimate need in our community, to improve the health of mothers and children in our community,” said mother and participant Hope Hickerson. “So I’m a big fan of events like this where the community comes together and helps each other.”
Conscious Moms is also starting a new project called Well Mama. This is a peer support group supported by a grant from the Huey Angelina Wilson Foundation.
The group begins May 16 in the Baton Rouge area.
