During a heatwave, our bodies struggle to maintain equilibrium as the scorching sun beats down on us relentlessly. At times like these, relying on the blessings of nature to provide relief is extremely beneficial. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, is a treasure trove of herbs that not only cool the body but help restore balance.

Here are five Ayurvedic herbs known for their ability to reduce heat wave discomfort.

1. Aloe Vera (Gritkumari):

Aloe vera, known as Gritkumari in Ayurveda, is a succulent plant revered for its cooling properties. Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the gel-like substance is a powerful treatment for heat-related problems. Consuming aloe vera juice or applying aloe vera gel topically can help hydrate your body, soothe sunburn, and reduce inflammation. Additionally, it aids in detoxification and promotes digestion and liver function.

2. Sandalwood (chandan):

Sandalwood has been a staple in Ayurvedic skin care and aromatherapy for centuries. Its cooling and soothing effects make it a valuable ally during heat waves. Applying sandalwood paste to your forehead, neck, and chest helps dissipate body heat and calm your mind. Additionally, its scent has a natural cooling effect on the nervous system, relieving stress and promoting relaxation.

3. Mint (Pudina):

Pudina, or mint, is a refreshing herb widely used in Ayurveda for its cooling effects. The menthol content provides instant relief from heat-related discomforts such as headaches and nausea. Mint tea, made by steeping fresh mint leaves in hot water, is a popular treatment for summer fatigue and dehydration. It not only cools your body, but also aids in digestion and freshens your breath.

4. Coriander (Dania):

Coriander is more than just a culinary herb. It is a treasure trove of nutrients with amazing cooling properties. In Ayurveda, coriander seeds are known for their ability to balance pitta dosha, the body’s energy associated with heat. Boiling coriander seeds in water to make a chilled decoction or adding them to meals reduces body heat and promotes internal harmony. Coriander is also a diuretic, which helps eliminate toxins from the body.

5. Indian Gooseberry (AMLA):

Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is a powerful Ayurvedic herb revered for its rejuvenating and cooling properties. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, amla boosts immunity and strengthens the body’s resilience during heatwaves. Consuming amla juice or incorporating it into your diet helps maintain electrolyte balance and prevent heat-related illnesses. Additionally, its cooling effect helps reduce body heat and promotes overall health.
