An honor student and university magician. Now, this week, Laney takes a deep look at art. Chief Meteorologist Laney Pope brings us back to the Intergenerational Senior Services Center for Arts and Wellness here in Winston-Salem. As you’ll soon see, this State of the Arts Center has a full range of arts, catering to all ages of visitors. that’s all. Rainie, please sit on the fabric bench over there and use your feet and hands. This is a great activity for your whole body and brain. And you know what I say, if I can do it, you can too. I mean, you’re definitely not looking at me. Oh my god, I believe you. Really, this is my first time. And that’s exactly what the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Health encourages, a place where everyone, regardless of age or expertise, can expand their knowledge and creativity in a friendly environment. Weaving, pottery and painting classes are designed to give you a taste of what you’ll find in downtown Sawtooth. You’re just slipping through it. Yes, that’s right, you’re the one who’s going to slide onto this board. I always thought art was something you could never mess up. It’s about expressing yourself. And it brings out the child in me. In other words, it’s an implicit language that we can all tap into. There’s a reason art classes are held in the same room for all ages. That’s the way we were designed. We are designed to take people through life and at different stages. You know, it’s so wonderful to be around a child with boundless energy and joy, and it also affects those who may be experiencing the challenges of illness and aging. That’s just hard, right? Honestly, if you tried something in an art studio, you might find yourself here on stage. This stage is used for various purposes. Today we’re learning about movement with Christina Soriano. I believe that we were born into this world dancing. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t dance throughout your life. Her classes are designed for people living with and caring for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease patients. We’ll share a series of prompts in a quick way and work through them quickly. I believe it is very important cognitively. It’s not about getting hung up on the movement, it’s about keeping moving forward and keeping people engaged. Move your right and left shoulders at the same time. Then you can immediately see the cognitive challenges involved. Lo and behold, Christina is so excited to have this space for dancing and more. Oh, that was a real game changer. Having a hub here allows the community to know they have a dedicated space where they can participate in arts activities and community classes. Today’s next lesson is music. Introducing John Beck. He leads his UNC School of the Arts drumming support program here at the Center. This art form transcends all ages. So you might have a toddler, grandma, mom, dad, and kids. That’s what we’re aiming for, John assures us. I can play the drums too. You can’t play the wrong note. The first thing you’re going to do is tickle the drum with your fingertips. Just like raindrops, you can make wind sounds by rubbing against the drum. So let’s raise our claws and turn it into a storm. You know all about storms. Oh yeah, and thunder with your fists. Hey, you can go back to the raindrops now. Next time you purr, speak louder. Ahhh. raindrops. Can you feel your whole body vibrating? Oh yeah. Music is vibration. The vibration feels good. Perfect, right? And the best part? When untrained people realize that they can actually make music, they smile and talk about the joy of being part of the musical experience. It’s really fun to see the changes. It should be her 4, 3, 2, 2. Take a step back and have a meeting. Let me tell you, we had a lot of fun there. This new community space at the Generations Center dot organization has classes of all kinds and you can find a list of classes and activities. oh. Laney, that’s amazing! Every room feels like entering another part of the world. Awesome. Yes, there are so many things under one roof and it’s all included. right? And I have met people of all ages there. It’s really special. We have more planned for later this month. Did you have a favorite experience here? Was it weather on the drums? I like drums. Well, I definitely like drums. I wasn’t very good at weaving. I’m going to be honest. Well, what do you know? Next week we are actually planning to visit some of the wellness programs there. So we’re in the kitchen. We’re also going to be in a clean, state-of-the-art gym
