Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Wash. – Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Chapel hosted an all-inclusive weekend wellness retreat May 3-5, 2024 in Herndon, Virginia. The event was led by 11th Air Force Lt. Col. Meosha Wilson. JBAB Wing Joint Base Senior Chaplain. More than 45 military members, military families and Air Force civilians attended the three-day event, which prioritized mental health and burnout prevention.
The retreat aimed to instill a lasting skill set to foster healthy coping mechanisms, with the promise of providing participants with essential tools for stress management. This effort highlighted his JBAB’s dedication to the team’s mental health and provided not just temporary relief, but concrete strategies for navigating the demands of military life.
Wilson emphasized the importance of filling one’s own metaphorical cup. “If you have nothing to draw from within yourself, you cannot accomplish your mission,” Wilson said. “The best way to prevent burnout is to be proactive about managing stress effectively and prioritizing your mental health.”
From stress management courses that provide participants with valuable coping strategies, to spa treatments, yoga and paint therapy, each session was tailored to foster an atmosphere that prioritizes mental vitality.
Paint therapy served as a creative outlet, allowing team members to express themselves through art. Many participants said that this session made them realize that it was their first time painting as an adult.
“My wife and I have been together for 20 years, and this is the first time she’s seen me painting,” said Sgt. Anthony Forester of JBAB’s 11th Civil Engineering Squadron.
Through this therapeutic practice, participants relieved stress, developed emotional resilience, and enhanced their overall well-being and mission readiness.
Overall, this wellness retreat provides practical strategies for tackling the challenges of military life head-on, by providing participants with the tools to build mental resilience and combat burnout. It served as an important resource for participants. “Through this process of self-reflection, I gained valuable insights and expanded my toolkit of coping strategies, which allows me to develop a practical self-care plan that resonates with my core values. ” said Cristina Hernandez of the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response. The JBAB Wellness Retreat highlighted the Air Force’s commitment to ensuring the health and vitality of its team by promoting active self-care and providing actionable solutions.
