Itasca County, Minnesota – A mural depicting the Ten Commandments and historical quotes related to spiritual values has been painted over at a new county jail in Minnesota after pressure from the Foundation for Religious Freedom (FFRF).
FFRF, the same group that won a federal court ruling against recognizing Good Friday as a state holiday, has a history of targeting anything related to Christianity in public squares.
Many quotes have been removed. Among them were words from Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Ronald Reagan, Alpha News reported.
According to the Epoch Times, Itasca County Sheriff Joe Dasovich said it was not his desire to whitewash the religious exhibits, but that he did so on the advice of his attorney.
Sheriff Dasovich, who took over the controversy after a recent election, was concerned that the new $75 million facility would fail future inspections by the Department of Corrections (DOC).
“I felt like I had to fill it up before the DOC inspection,” Sheriff Dasovich said. “Did I want it down? Absolutely not. Can I put it back up? Absolutely.”
The deleted quote from President Reagan read, “Behind the cover of the Bible lies the answer to every problem facing humanity.” He made the comments at the 1983 National Religious Broadcasters Convention.
Quotes from President Jefferson’s book Notes on the State of Virginia, first published in 1785, were posted on the walls. His justice cannot sleep forever. ”
Another quote from President Reagan that was removed was: “If we forget that we are one nation under God, we will be one nation gone.” was.
