A local brewery and a chef teamed up to create a craft beer to raise money for a free mental health program for hospitality workers.

HOUSTON — A local brewery and a chef have teamed up to create a new beer, with a portion of the proceeds going toward mental health resources for hospitality workers.

The reason they do this is because they have lost a loved one to suicide and want to make sure they help those who are suffering.

Service work is a labor of love that serves others.

“You do it because you take pride in the service you provide, and sometimes the person you serve the least is yourself,” says Two Head Dog owner. said Lindsay Burleson, an ambassador for I’ll Have What She’s Having.

In some cases, mental health can take a backseat.

“It takes the place of a lot of struggles that haven’t been talked about for a long time,” Burleson said. “I’ve lost so many people to material problems, suicide, depression, etc.”

Local bars and chefs are dealing with losses.

“For us, we have lost Dom, a longtime employee and friend who took his own life for reasons unknown to us,” said Matt Petterson, owner of Equal Parts Brewing. I decided to end it,” he said.

“I lost my nephew Cameron Burrell. He committed suicide almost two years ago,” said local chef and Olympic gold medalist Dawn Burrell.

Dealing with the pain wasn’t easy for the industry leader, but he was determined to help others who might be struggling.

“We wanted to create a place where we could help not only our employees but also others how that experience affected them,” Pettersson said.

Equal Parts Brewing and Dawn Burrell have partnered with I’ll Have What She’s Have, a nonprofit organization that provides free mental health services.

“And when something like that happens, what you want to do is make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else,” said Juni Rodriguez of Equal Parts Brewing.

In order to raise funds to pay for these services, they did their best to create a new beer.

“It’s the same with our West African grain portfolio and black rice that we used to develop this beer,” Burrell said.

The new beer is called “Shared Strength.”

“It’s an easy-drinking lager,” Peterson says.

The beer will go on sale Friday. They hope it not only honors those who died, but also helps others.

A launch party will be held on Friday from 5pm to 7pm at Equal Parts Brewing, where you can purchase the beer. It will also be sold at 12 other bars in the Houston area. All profits from the beer go towards funding free mental health programs.

If you’d like to purchase a beer, head to one of the 13 participating bars below.
