Rapper Lil Jon, one of hip-hop’s biggest and arguably loudest voices, is exploring a gentler side with the release of his second album about meditation.
“No, I’m not your typical meditation guru,” the rapper himself admits.
Despite his fame as a hip-hop artist and producer, the musician said he’s been focusing more on the meditative side lately, as he promotes his new album of guided meditations.
The rapper says he can’t “scream all the time” and wants to be a voice for the importance of taking care of your mental health.
“I wanted to share a lot of things that I’ve struggled with and how I dealt with them,” Lil Jon says. “The overall goal is to help anyone calm their mind, step away from life for a moment, and go into a meditative state.”
The musician said he practices meditation and self-affirmation daily to keep himself centered.
“[Meditation] It’s helped me more as a person than as an artist because my music is all about, “Oh, that’s crazy.” ” he explains. “It helped me feel more calm and lower my stress levels.”
One mental health practitioner hopes Lil Jon’s new album and his openness in seeking mental health support will help break down the stigma around mental health care, especially in underserved communities. Are expected.
“I don’t see anyone who looks like us looking for resources or who looks like us as therapists,” said psychologist and therapist Dr. Patrice Le Goy. “I think there are some marginalized communities that are struggling with mental health issues but don’t feel like it’s accessible to them.”
Lil Jon has stated that his next two albums will be meditation albums, including one focused on sleep.
He is also working on an EDM collaboration project, the rapper said.
