From busy families to health-conscious singles, everyone loves using the air fryer to make quick, healthier meals. But love for air fryers doesn’t translate into love for Jamie Oliver’s new show. Jamie’s Air Fryer Cooking.
The prime-time show, starring Oliver and guest chefs, first aired on BBC Channel 4 on April 15. Unfortunately, the production was far from a huge success, with many calling it disgusting and unoriginal. Is this show as bad as many claim?
All about Jamie’s Air Fryer Cooking
The world has been obsessed with air fryers for a while now. Mini ovens are versatile, consume less energy and take less time to cook than traditional ovens. Ideal for small households or single-person households. Putting everything in one container and processing it automatically is useful if you don’t have enough time or energy.
Air fryers require little or no oil or fat to cook food. Cook by circulating hot air around it. This leads to the Maillard reaction, a process in which all the sugars and amino acids in a food react to heat, changing its taste and texture. You can usually make anything that requires a pot, oil, or tempura. However, you can also go further and use it in place of the microwave or traditional oven.
According to Gitnux, approximately 10.4 million people in the US owned an air fryer in 2020, and 45% of UK households invested in this compact kitchen appliance. So it might make sense for Jamie Oliver Productions to bring this show to people’s screens. The two-part series packs multiple recipes into hour-long episodes. Oliver is joined in each episode by a guest chef who is well-versed in the art of air fryer cooking.
In the first episode, Michelin-trained chef Poppy O’Toole, who has 4.3 million TikTok followers, joined Oliver as a guest chef. Mr. O’Toole has special expertise in making potatoes in different styles and showed how to make some pretty tasty potato dishes in the air fryer.
In episode two, Sabrina Gidda, author of Modern South Asian Cuisine, will join Oliver in the kitchen. Together, they try their hand at air fryer lamb chops.
Katie Millard, Executive Producer at Jamie Oliver Productions, said: Jamie’s air fryer recipes are already a big hit on our website jamieoliver.com, where he has been viewed over 500,000 times to date. ”
“Together with our long-time partner Tefal, Jamie was able to meet the nation’s huge demand for more air fryer recipes, and was passionate about developing new recipes every second. Find out in this series , there’s a lot more to air fryers than just nuggets and chips,” she added.
Even though Millard was confident in the show showcasing Oliver’s airfryer expertise; Jamie’s Air Fryer Cooking It has garnered quite a few bad reviews since the first episode aired. Many have noted that Oliver seems to have a tendency to follow trends and jump on bandwagons.
Some doubt the happy partnership behind the show. Channel 4 and Jamie Oliver Productions produced the show in collaboration with Tefal, and unsurprisingly, the show will feature the Tefal airflyer. Because of this, many feel that this episode is nothing more than his one-hour Tefal ad.
Another issue is the number of ingredients needed for each recipe. Jamie Oliver is known for his one-pot meals, super-quick dishes, and inexpensive recipes. His recipes are also known for being very easy and approachable. But so far, the recipes he’s shared on the show take little time, use more ingredients and a fair number of dishes than those made in a traditional oven.
It seems like only part of the whole process involves using the fryer, which is odd and perhaps a little disappointing. Also, one of the main selling points of this device is how easy it is to just throw a few things in the basket and have your food ready and done within minutes. But at least on this show, Oliver doesn’t believe in keeping things simple. Instead, it feels like they’ve taken something that was already working relatively efficiently and made it even more difficult and expensive.
