Hauppauge, N.Y. — Natural Helpers from Hauppauge High School visited elementary schools across the district to teach their young peers about various aspects of health, the district announced.
Natural Helpers is a peer mentoring program that teaches students communication skills and how to provide support to others. Natural Helpers receive training that provides them with the skills and resources they need to learn positive ways to help friends, take care of themselves, and deal with difficult situations. They attend weekly meetings and discuss strategies to help their peers.
In September, Natural Helpers Sophia Cambarelli, Reece Coughlin, Abigail Hartman, Hannah Harten and Jacob Wolmets applied to the Cohen Strong Mental Health Program run by Northwell Health.

This program was created to further inform and guide students to promote the importance of mental health in schools and communities. After being accepted into the program, these students attend monthly meetings to develop community-based projects, and each takes additional courses to earn a certification in teen mental health first aid. did.
The goal of the program was for each participating school to form a project to provide mental health awareness. To accomplish their goal, the high school students met with each of her three elementary schools in the district and gave interactive presentations.
First, primary school students were divided into small groups and experienced a series of fun activities.
