MIFFLINTOWN — Commissioner Juniata on Tuesday proclaimed May 2024 as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. Officials released this declaration to members of the Bikers Alliance for Education: Ryan Myers, Phillip Myers, Dale Miller, Mike Reaser, Teresa Miller, and Teresa Dreher.
Teresa Miller, membership director for ABATE’s Juniata and Perry County chapters in Pennsylvania, told commissioners that ABATE is one of the oldest grassroots organizations in the United States.
“We run the OSAL program, which stands for Operation Save A Life, in all our schools. We fight for motorcycle rights. We are an organization, not a club, and our One of our main priorities is safety.” Miller said.

Second declaration to designate May 2024 as Mental Health Awareness Month. Juniata Valley Behavioral and Developmental Services Administrator Cathy Whalen was present to accept the declaration on behalf of Juniata Valley Behavioral and Developmental Services. Kathy expressed her support for lighting the courthouse green to spread awareness. Anyone who wants to participate in spreading awareness can decorate the front of their house with green lights.

“We oversee mental health and intellectual disability providers and early intervention in Huntingdon, Mifflin, and Juniata counties. And we ask you to sign our declaration to raise awareness about mental health. I came here to do that.” Whalen said.

Ms. Whalen shared several upcoming events her organization will be hosting, including a Family Fun Fair on Thursday, May 9, at the Port Royal Fairgrounds from 4 to 7 p.m. Their organization will be setting up a booth at Kid Connection on Saturday, May 11th from 9am. On May 13 at 2 p.m., the organization will host a Recovery Day Picnic at Riverside Park in Huntington, with a visit from the Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumers Association Recovery Bus.
PMHCA wanted to share and participate in as many events as possible during Mental Health Awareness Month. During the month of May, a team of staff members and board representatives will be traveling throughout Pennsylvania, serving as speakers, vendors, and passionate supporters, and actively participating in mental health awareness events across Pennsylvania. • Reviewed the April appraisal report submitted by the Juniata County Assessor’s Office, the Sheriff’s Monthly Report submitted by the Sheriff’s Office, and the financial report submitted by the Treasurer’s Office.
• At the request of Adam Waite, Director of 911 Services, we have approved Abigail J. Adair as an unpaid intern for the Juniata County 911 Department. If approved, Adair will begin her internship in May 2024, working a total of 150 hours.
• Check payment approved for $213,948.83.
• Approved the hiring of Tammy Dasharm as Assistant District Attorney, effective May 13, 2024, and established her annual salary, as recommended by Juniata County District Attorney Corey J. Snook.
Commissioners also acknowledged purchasing a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe for the Department of Probation and Parole for a total of $59,935.65. This expenditure will be covered by the Probation and Parole Supervision Fund.
