Traditionally, May 5 commemorates Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Pueblo in 1862, but the festival has turned into the unofficial start of summer. Parties celebrating Mexican-American culture will be held across the country this weekend, and menus will include chips and dip, tacos, churros, and, of course, alcoholic beverages.
But if you want to extend your Dry January commitment or simply prefer an alcohol-free option, you don’t have to feel left out. Easily create delicious alternatives to the alcoholic beverages you enjoy. Mocktails will be in full swing this year, especially since Cinco de Mayo falls on a Sunday. No one wants to start a new week with the afterglow of the previous day’s party. Not to mention, most recipes call for coconut water, sparkling water, and fresh fruit, making mocktails a healthier option. Instead of the side effects of added sugar and alcohol, drinking your favorite spirit-free drink can help keep your mind sharp, energized, and your immune system strong.

watermelon mint mojito
This mocktail is similarly hydrating and refreshing, making it a classic summer drink. To make it, mix fresh watermelon and mint leaves in your favorite glass. Add 0.5 ounces of lime juice and fresh lime slices. Pour over ice and carbonated water, stir well and enjoy.
mango margarita
Nothing symbolizes Cinco de Mayo like a margarita. The sweet mango and tagine in this mocktail create an irresistibly sweet and tangy flavor. To make it, combine 2 jalapeño slices and 1/2 ounce of fresh lime juice. Next, add 2 ounces of mango juice, 1/2 ounce of agave, and 1/4 ounce of orange extract (orange juice is fine too). Shake over ice and strain into a lime and tagine rimmed glass. Pour in mango sparkling water and garnish with jalapeño slices. If you prefer a blended margarita, combine all of the same ingredients in a blender to create a refreshing slushie.
grapefruit paloma
This sweet and sour drink is a faithful reproduction of the real thing, and you won’t forget the alcohol. To make it, mix 2 ounces of grapefruit juice, 1 ounce of fresh lime juice, and 1 ounce of maple syrup. Pour sparkling water and ice over it and garnish with grapefruit slices.
frosé
This summer’s fan-favorite drink is easily transformed into an equally delicious non-alcoholic alternative. To make this slush, combine 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries, 1 cup of Martinelli’s Sparkling Blush, and 0.5 ounces of lemon juice. After mixing, add honey to taste and enjoy.
Pomegranate Martini Mocktail
This pomegranate martini mocktail gives the bonefish grilled version a run for its money. Even if you add regular vodka to a sweet drink, this recipe won’t give you any flavor at all. To make it, shake 1 ounce of simple syrup, 4 ounces of pomegranate juice, and the juice of half an orange with ice. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with frozen red grapes.
