From opening up about adjusting to single life after her divorce from Marc Silverstein in 2021 to opening up about the pain of losing a close friend, Busy Philipps has always been candid about navigating mental health challenges. . Most recently, busy this week The star has reflected on what it was like to be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) twice, once when she was eight years old and once when she was 39 years old.

The second time came as a result of supporting her eldest daughter Birdie, 15, through her own diagnosis. “[Her] The doctor was going through the ADHD checklist, and I felt my ex-husband looking at me, and I was looking at him, because every single thing the doctor said. Because I thought, “Oh, this is off the charts for me,” and that’s what motivated me to go to my own doctor,” Phillips, 44, recalls.

After getting her own diagnosis, she was also diagnosed with ADHD. “[My doctor] I was like, “This is a common story.” I see a lot of mothers who come here after going through exactly what you’re going through,” says the actress.

Phillips soon learned from her mother that she had been diagnosed with ADHD when she was 8 years old. Her family tried to manage it with medication, but she didn’t like it and “that was it.”

Now, girls 5 eva The star is now on a medication called Kelbury, which she is a spokesperson for, and has realized how much and for how long her ADHD has really affected her mental health and well-being. During her childhood, she said, “her school was always really hard” for her. “I had a lot of problems with executive function, remembering papers, remembering homework, remembering dates,” she says. “I couldn’t understand why other people could do it and I couldn’t. And you internalize it. I really found myself buying into the ‘I’m just a bad student’ narrative.” I noticed. Maybe school really isn’t my thing. ”

The exception was when she attended college for two years before being cast. freaks school, This gave her the opportunity to control which classes she took. “We now know that it is very characteristic of ADHD. [that] Psychology and philosophy were fascinating to me, so I was able to focus very much,” she recalls.

Phillips admits that she has been “very successful” in her career, but feels that much of that time was “intolerable circumstances.” “[I was] I was always forgetting something, leaving something undone, not getting enough done, and having 17 different things on my to-do list that I felt like I would never get to. I left it at that. It makes you feel bad about yourself and makes you talk about your own intelligence and abilities,” she says.

Phillips also struggled in her early 30s, when her two children were young. “I felt really bad about myself. I thought, ‘Why is this so hard for me?’ Why can’t I remember that I have stupid gym class at 2pm on Tuesdays? I’m a bad mother. ”

in retrospect, mean girls Starr said he was heartbroken by how hard she was on him. “I had ADHD,” Phillips says. “And now that I’m on medication, I feel better. Everything has changed, especially the way I feel about myself.”

It’s like a fog has lifted over the past few years, she says. “So many things have impacted my life in amazing ways, professionally, creatively, and even as a parent, and I’m so grateful for that,” she says.

Phillips also continues to work on other aspects of her mental health, such as setting boundaries. This, she admits, “she really learned” from TikTok. “Boundaries are really difficult for me,” she says. “As with anything, you don’t want to go too far in one direction, because you can boundary yourself from any relationship if you want to. But I talked to a therapist and… I continue to do my best and strive to do better in regards to patterns that I have noticed in my life that no longer serve me well.”

And as Phillips continues to explore life as a single mom, she said she’s learning how to define what she wants. “I have a lot of questions for myself and others about what I really want, what I feel I’m capable of, and how I want to show up in my relationships with others.” It was important to be really honest,” she explains. . “It’s complicated because there’s so much to unravel and the only way to unravel is ongoing. I’m not a perfect person who’s fully healed. Nobody is. If someone takes your time If it’s worth it, I think it would be interesting to work with you to figure out a way to cure your weird asshole.”

At the same time, Phillips is keen to continue nurturing her relationship with herself. “I try to be kind to myself,” she says. “I think we all tend to talk about ourselves, and I try to be really open about myself.”
