“We’re playing mind games together.”
Mind Games, the title track from John Lennon’s 1973 album of the same name, is often misunderstood as a battle of wits with his lover, Yoko Ono, of course.
The inspiration for the lyrics of this song was actually a book that Lennon was reading at the time. Mind Games: A Guide to the Inner Universe The one that came out last year.
This book, written by Robert Masters and Jean Huston, provides brain training exercises to help people focus on a more positive outlook on life.
So in many ways, this song was a precursor to the promotion of inner peace and mindfulness that our society has embraced in recent years.
It’s no surprise, then, that John Lennon’s estate partnered with the Luminate app for a series of meditation mixes based on ‘mind games’ for Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Dew.

The new mindful mix incorporates many sound design techniques from the 1973 original.
Some of the recordings are enhanced with additional instrumentation by John and Yoko’s son, Sean Ono Lennon.
Announced on May 1, 2024, the project was developed to put listeners into a relaxed meditative state and “help guide the mind to deeper states of consciousness.”
The Lumenate app works by gently strobing the back of a user’s smartphone with their closed eyes, inducing them into a state of consciousness somewhere between deep meditation and psychedelic.
Four of the nine new “Mind Games” mixes are available as binaural versions, each focusing specifically on a different type of brainwave: beta, delta, gamma, and theta.
“Beta waves occur when you’re thinking, delta waves occur when you’re completely relaxed in deep sleep, gamma waves are associated with higher order thinking and concentration, and theta waves occur during sleep or daydreaming. ” reads the attached statement.

Yoko Ono once explained the message behind “Mind Games” and what he was trying to accomplish, and this new partnership feels closer to his idea.
“John was trying to get the message across that we all play mind games. But if you can play mind games, why not use it to create a positive future? Become a positive mind game. for.”
“‘Mind Games’ is an incredibly powerful song. At the time, people didn’t fully understand its message because it was still ahead of its time.”
“Now people would understand that. At the time, I don’t think people understood that they were playing mind games anyway.”

Sean Ono Lennon said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Lumenate on this release to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month.”
“I think our ‘Mind Games’ project is fun, meaningful and potentially mind-expanding. I have been using the Luminate app for personal meditation since its launch. I have had many deep experiences.”
“My father was famously obsessed with meditation. I remember experimenting with a ‘flicker machine’ that he had in his bedroom, which gave me the idea of stroboscopic brain wave guidance. He taught me this for the first time.”
“I thought it made sense to combine the music of Mind Games with the science of Lumenate, and I really hope people enjoy the results as much as I do.
Tom Galea, Lumenate co-founder, added in a statement: “It was a great honor to work with Sean and The Lennon Estate on this exciting collaboration.”
“The journey this film takes you on is deeply relaxing and emotionally moving, providing a unique and powerful canvas to explore your soul.”
“I can’t wait for the world to experience it. It’s already had a very meaningful impact on me personally.”
Launched to coincide with the start of Mental Health Awareness Month in May 2024, the ‘Mind Games’ meditation mix is now available for free via the Luminate app.
