A local nonprofit is working to address mental health issues in Tulsa’s Black community.
The Tulsa Black Mental Health Alliance said it is working to reduce stigma and provide more resources to those in need.
TBMHA provides professional counseling services and plans to create an inclusive environment for people of color facing mental health issues.
One of the group’s founding members said it can be difficult to receive mental health services from people who don’t look like you.
“They come and give us effective tools to overcome trauma, to overcome crises, to overcome the different things that African Americans and Black and brown people go through. They don’t come from North Tulsa. They didn’t go to our schools. They don’t have the trauma of our generation,” said Kimberly Wayne, a licensed professional counselor. Ta.
Wayne said these agencies provide professional counseling services, among other resources.
“To help the community understand that we all have mental health. When it comes to mental health, there are some areas that we all need to focus on. These are the areas where we can make it happen. Here are some resources. These are some tips. There are community organizations that have people like you and we can connect you with.” he said.
The organization was founded by the Terrence Crutcher Foundation. We partner with several other agencies, including Overcross Counseling and Caring Hearts Professional Counseling Services in North Tulsa.
