Roman Collins, a fan favorite who was saved by a judge last week, has been sent home.
In Monday, April 23rd episode, american idol, Fans of the show were shocked when host Ryan Seacrest announced that Collins and Jayna Ellis were sent home. After the show, PEOPLE met with judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie to discuss the results.
“Roman brings so much energy. Roman gives you that you’re exhausted when it’s over. It’s a spiritual experience,” Richie, 74, exclusively tells PEOPLE. “And when you finish a concert and find yourself emotionally exhausted, that’s the romance.”
Richie reflects on the loss and says he is confident in Collins’ future.
“I think Jennifer Hudson was eliminated in seventh place, so I believe the potential for superstardom exists,” he continued.
Ritchie added, “If we get the top 14, we can make a whole business out of it. So what we’re able to attract is incredible.” American Idol. And I wasn’t going to let that whole class go. It’s so beautiful. I mean, it’s kind of scary. Because every time they crossed the finish line, Luke and Katie and I looked at each other and thought, “Thank god we weren’t late.” ”

Both Elise and Collins were saved by the judges the previous week, but now each contestant’s fate is in the hands of viewers watching at home.
“The bottom line is, we don’t always agree, but he was a great singer and a great spirit,” says Brian, 47. “He was a truly gifted person. Every week we send grieving people home.”

On Sunday, April 22, Gagnon wowed the judges and guest mentor Gene Simmons with her performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Run to You.”
“Your transformation and growth from day one to now has been so inspiring to watch and that’s why this show has been on the air for so long,” Brian said.
“And you’re the perfect example of how you can take this experience and stand there confidently for the rest of your life. It was amazing.”
