EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Mental health and wellness are important. That was the message Wednesday at East Lansing High School, where a mental health and wellness summit was held.
East Lansing Public Schools’ goal for the event was to highlight what’s available in the community and get everyone paying attention to their mental health. This is the first year of the summit, and the district’s mental health coordinator said preparations have been in the works for some time. The event was open to people of all ages and numerous resources were available. One participant, Amy Dalton, said she came to learn.
“It’s important for everyone to know that no matter where they are in their journey, there is support and that it’s okay. And to reach out.” Dalton said.

Available resources included opportunities to connect with therapists, grief counseling, and family centers.
Heather Findley, the district’s mental health coordinator, wanted to make sure all aspects of health were covered Wednesday.
“We know that physical health is part of it too, like being connected to ourselves. We really took care to provide that,” Findley said.
Therapy dogs were also available for those looking for a furry friend. East Lansing Superintendent Dori Reiko said each school has at least one therapy dog.
“Our kids and staff use them on a daily basis for a variety of reasons. And it’s been a great community builder for each of our buildings,” Reiko said.
Reiko added that the district will prioritize mental health after the pandemic.
“As we brought our children and staff home, we recognized a new focus on supporting the health and mental health of our staff and students,” Reiko said.
One of the biggest reasons for the event is to show East Lansing cares, the district cares and the community cares, Findley said.
“We want to be welcoming and we want to represent a safe and welcoming community, and this is one way we can provide that,” Findley said.
The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and organizers hope to make it an annual event.
