As our communities strive to provide a comprehensive education for our youth, we must not overlook important aspects of their well-being. Recent studies have shown a worrying increase in mental health issues among students, from anxiety to depression. These issues not only impact students’ academic performance, but also their overall health and long-term success.
As a current undergraduate student, having access to mental health resources such as mental health programs and counselors has helped me navigate school more successfully. Having the additional support has allowed me to leverage it and encourage others to seek help.
Expanding these resources to all schools across Indiana would strengthen our focus on student health. All students have the right to access qualified counselors, mental health programs, and support networks within their educational settings.
Having effective and easily accessible resources for students ensures that schools can provide valuable support to students. Having these resources facilitates open and non-judgmental conversations about mental health. Raising mental health awareness opens up opportunities for students, educators, and parents to learn about the impact of receiving this support through school settings.
An investment in the mental health of our students is an investment in our collective future. By providing the necessary resources and support, we help our students grow both academically and emotionally.
I urge community leaders and policymakers to prioritize addressing student mental health and allocate the funding and resources needed to make meaningful change.
