FSN news release
Dr. Desiree Cassel, pelvic floor physical therapist and owner of The Balanced Momtality Women’s Health and Wellness, is offering two free opportunities for women in the Los Alamos community to learn about pelvic healing and recovery. We are excited to announce our partnership with two local organizations. Floors, cores, etc!
The first free Pelvic Floor 101 workshop will be held on Thursday, April 25th from 10-11 a.m. at Family Strength Network, 3540 Orange Street. In this lecture-style class, participants will learn what the pelvic floor is and how it functions. , and how to tell when it’s not working properly. You will also learn many tips and strategies on how to deal with more common symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, such as urinary incontinence (leakage), frequent urination, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, and pelvic organ prolapse.
The second free Pelvic Floor 101 workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 30th from 10-11 a.m. at the Family YMCA. This workshop is more hands-on and movement-based, reviewing basic concepts of pelvic floor anatomy/function/signs of dysfunction. We then put it all together and progress through breathing techniques and basic pelvic floor and core exercises with feedback from Dr. Cassel.
I don’t have any of these issues, but I’m still wondering if my pelvic floor is causing other issues. Although the workshops overlap, the structure is very different (lecture and active), so be sure to attend one or both workshops to find out. Many other symptoms such as back pain, diastasis recti, hip pain, and coccyx pain are all closely related to the pelvic floor.
Dr. Desiree (Fellers) Cassel of Balanced Motherhood was born and raised in Los Alamos and recently moved back to town after living in Albuquerque for the past 12 years. There she earned a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics, a doctorate in physical therapy, and she raised three beautiful children. After her first pregnancy, she suffered from her own pelvic floor dysfunction, but like many, she accepted it as part of her motherhood. Sadly, this meant I didn’t have to violently cross her legs every time she jumped on the trampoline or sneezed or laughed to keep her from peeing. After graduating from her PT school, she got pregnant with her second child and decided to try her own knowledge and was able to completely solve her problem even during her pregnancy . She is very dedicated to educating, empowering and supporting other women throughout her life so that they don’t have to accept these common issues as part of her life. It has become my passion. This led her to start her own private clinic, Balanced Maternity Women’s Health and Wellness, here in her town. There, she treats women of all ages using her holistic, whole-body approach to heal from the core of their bodies.
