A Gold Coast woman named the region’s best Pilates instructor has told the heartbreaking story behind why she entered the industry.
Natalie Rasmussen, owner of Soul Squeeze Yoga & Massage, a Pilates studio in Willow Vale, said she is “grateful” to the community for helping her build her business.
She was recently voted the best Pilates instructor on the Gold Coast by Gold Coast Bulletin readers.
Rasmussen opened Soul Squeeze five years ago, just nine months after the sudden death of her husband of 20 years, Blake Rasmussen.
“I loved everything about him,” she said.
“He was such a wonderful person and we are so grateful to have him in our lives.”

Rasmussen said he decided to open his own studio because he couldn’t support himself and his three children on one wage.
“It was the most difficult time of our lives, so we knew we had to turn something so difficult into something to help us get through it,” she said.
“I had no idea that yoga and Pilates could not only be a second source of income, but actually help with the healing process.
“[The studio and the community]literally make me smile every day and keep me physically and mentally healthy.”

Rasmussen said she teaches up to 12 classes a week, including private lessons for those who lack confidence.
She said she believes the reason Pilates has exploded around the world is because it is suitable for all ages and genders.
“But most of the time, it’s fun to do.”
