CHEYENNE, Wyo. — AARP Wyoming will host four virtual sessions in its creative writing series “Write to Wellness,” hosted by local Jackson author Matt Daly and Colorado-based author Lucy Flood.
The series is free and participants do not need to be AARP members, but registration is required for each individual session.
Write to Wellness is a creative writing-based program started by Flood and Daly that shares writing practices based on the benefits of expressive writing for wellness, engagement, and productivity.
About sessions
session 1, Write to foster kindness and connectionis Wednesday, April 24th, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. According to AARP, this session will share scientific research on the benefits of social connections. Participants will engage in mindfulness practices focused on positive relationships and write creative pieces focused on gratitude and daily kindness practices. Click here to register for Session 1.
Sessions 2, 3, and 4 will all begin in May with the theme “Craft a Flooring Life.”
Session 2 will take place on Wednesday, May 1st from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. This session will focus on using the senses as a means of communication. Groups write stories about imaginary sensory experiences. The goal is to make this experience a reality for others over the coming week. Click here to apply for Session 2.
Session 3 will be held on Wednesday, May 8th from 12:00pm to 1:30pm, where Daly and Flood will discuss their research on the value of having a sense of purpose. Participants write about experiences in which they felt a strong sense of purpose. Click here to register for Session 3.
Session 4 will take place on Wednesday, May 15th from 12pm to 1:30pm. The final session explores the science of gratitude. After reviewing several gratitude habits, participants will write about their specific gratitude habits, utilizing writing techniques practiced and built throughout the series. Flood has written for The Atlantic, Inside Climate News, Jackson Hole News & Guide, Louisville Courier-Journal, and Berkeleyside, and was awarded an Environmental Journalism Fellowship. .
Daly is the author of Between Here and Home (Unsolicited Press) and the chapbook Red State (Seven Kitchens Press). He has also received the Nelche Blancian Award and received a Creative Writing Fellowship for his poetry from the Wyoming Arts Council.
