Nutrient lacking in young people: Vitamin N

Natural, or “vitamin N” is essential for physical and mental health. However, many young people spend less time outdoors than prisoners. Beyond the health benefits, spending time in nature can help turn younger generations into stewards of nature. That’s why this Earth Day, we have to remind people to take this extra vitamin.

Nature, or “vitamin N”, is humanity’s original medicine. Spending every day indoors and staring at a screen for hours on end has become the norm. In fact, this is a modern experiment we are conducting with young people, and we are seeing results. The rise in ADHD, depression, diabetes, and anxiety symptoms among young people cannot be separated from the rise in disconnection from the natural world.

Beyond the obvious physical and psychological benefits of spending time in nature, we forget nature’s original role as our primary teacher. The natural world teaches us eternal lessons about patience, resilience, adaptability, and stewardship.




For older generations, lockdown was seen as an opportunity to make the outdoors great again. A 2020 Gallup poll found that nearly half (48%) of U.S. adults said they would rather live in the countryside than in a city or suburb, up from 39% a year earlier.

However, the opposite is true for children. Time spent outdoors is in permanent decline. A growing body of research suggests that children are spending significantly less time outdoors and more time on screens.

A 2018 study by Sanford Health News found that American children spend an average of seven hours a day in front of a screen, but less than 10 minutes in unplanned outdoor play. . Similarly, a global study revealed that children around the world spend less time outdoors than prisoners.

It’s not difficult to understand why. Currently, interactions are taking place online, but the coronavirus pandemic has led to a surge in e-learning. Technology has definitely been a godsend during the pandemic-induced stay-at-home downturn. But now that doors are open and restrictions are lifted, those shackles are even harder to shake.

Unfortunately, this lack of nature is not limited to children. Young professionals are also spending less time outside. Bupa research shows that two in five adult girlfriends in the UK do not spend enough time outdoors and have limited access to green spaces.

The same factors are involved. Educators can conduct much of their learning online. As more jobs can be performed online, workers are becoming less and less willing to go outside, even to commute. Similarly, many young professionals are much more likely to live in an urban jungle than somewhere closer to an actual jungle.

“Natural deficiency disease” may sound like a pseudoscientific buzzword. However, there is solid research to back it up. This term, along with vitamin N, was coined by author Richard Louv in his 2005 book. Last Child in the Woods: Saving Children from Natural Deficiency. He argued that many behavioral problems were simply caused by a sharp decline in the amount of time children spent outdoors.

Research shows that spending time among plants or near water reduces stress and increases attention span. In fact, a meta-analysis of the relationship between contact with nature and health shows that it can improve brain activity, blood pressure, mental health, and sleep.

Japan provides an interesting example. In the only country with a word for “death from overwork” (Karoshi), forest bathing, or basking in the presence of trees, appears to have profound psychological and physiological effects.

During the popularity blue zone A Netflix documentary, tech millionaire Brian Johnson’s “never die” mantra, and longevity are the stories of the month. But we shouldn’t view nature simply as another companion in our arsenal of training regimens and multivitamins. Our relationship with nature should go deeper than that.

Because nature teaches patience.Life is happening more and more online and faster. Our modern brains, addicted to instant gratification, become confused when a video or webpage doesn’t load quickly. Growth is nature’s buffering. Stare into a 100-year-old oak tree and you’ll see that this splendor didn’t happen overnight.

Similarly, nature teaches us that not everything can be controlled, It shouldn’t be. We have almost complete control over the pixels that appear on our screen. Minecraft and other “open world” games give young digital natives a sense of complete control over their surroundings.

However, in the complex world of nature, random ordering is common. The reason our brains are calmed by the sound of rain or waterfalls is because they have no rhythm of their own. Similarly, even the bark of a tree or the shape of a cloud exhibits the same designless design.

Similarly, nature teaches us about the inevitability of change. While we cannot prevent or avoid seasonal changes, all we can do is prepare for and adapt to them. The online world may give us the illusion that the sum of the forces around us is desirable. But as many sages have taught us for thousands of years, change is the only constant. Nature reminds us of this every day, if we are willing.

Finally, nature teaches us the importance of stewardship. Never before has our natural world been under such great threat. Only by learning about something can we truly understand the importance of its protection. As Robert Pyle famously said, “What does the extinction of the condor mean to a child who has never seen a wren?”

Nature, or vitamin N, has always been a soothing balm for the bodies and minds of young people at the mercy of technology. But just as nature can be preserved, wewe must learn to save that. The responsibility to protect our natural world now falls on younger generations. That’s why this Earth Day, young people need to learn about the importance of nature and get extra vitamin N.
