A California supplement company has issued a recall on one lot of baby vitamins because they contain high doses or “extra-potency” vitamin D that can cause vomiting, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday. Announced with a warning.

Nordic Naturals, based in Watsonville, a city near Santa Cruz in central California, said Saturday that about 3,800 bottles of its baby vitamin D3 liquid were affected by the recall, with a fifth of those already returned by retailers. announced.

“Long-term use of the recalled baby’s vitamin D3 liquid can lead to elevated vitamin D levels, which can result in vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, frequent urination, and failure to thrive in infants. The FDA warned:

The body naturally produces vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, but vitamin D is often deficient in cold weather and in areas far from the equator. It is naturally found in foods such as oily fish, red meat, and eggs.

A lack of vitamin D can weaken the development of healthy bones, teeth, and muscles, and a lack of the chemical can lead to bone deformities such as rickets.

However, taking too much vitamin D over a long period of time can cause too much calcium to build up in the body, weakening bones and damaging some internal organs.

According to the warning, a manufacturing error resulted in high levels of vitamin D in the products, which typically contain 10 micrograms per 0.76 fluid ounce bottle. He said there were no reports of any harmful medical incidents and that the recall was simply the result of an error.

The affected product is sold as a nutritional supplement for infants up to one year of age, has lot number 234909, and has an expiration date of December 2025.

The FDA said Nordic Naturals took “immediate action” by notifying distributors and retailers, as well as customers directly, via email to arrange product returns.

Federal authorities warned customers who still have the product to immediately stop using it and return it to the place of purchase.

“Nordic Naturals prioritizes consumer safety and reaffirms our commitment to high-quality products,” the company said as part of its warning. “To protect the health and well-being of our customers, we will promptly remove the recalled products from the market.”

This is not the first time a vitamin-enriched product has been subject to a recall. In April 2021, the New Jersey-based household products company recalled several types of vitamin gummies after consumers reported that the products contained “metal mesh material.”

Previously, in December 2018, the FDA found six different brands of dog food contained potentially dangerous levels of vitamin D, prompting numerous voluntary recalls.
