  • The theme explores the human need for a higher power and its consequences.
  • Differences in religious and scientific depictions between adaptations are highlighted.
  • Religious symbolism is used to add depth to characters and stories.

There is an underlying theme 3 Physical problems, both a Chinese TV series and a Netflix series, and it is the result of man’s desperate desire to believe in God or a higher power, and that desire. The Tencent and Netflix versions take very different approaches, especially when it comes to religion and doctrine. That theme begins in the first scene of the Netflix version.Jing Tseng) His father was indicted during the Cultural Revolution for teaching theoretical physics that was contrary to communist doctrine and could suggest the existence of God. The Red Guards have their own religion and god called Maoism, which leads them to brutalize and murder millions of people.

3 Body Matters: The Search for God

The theme of finding a God to believe in is less obvious in the Chinese version of the film. 3 Physical problems. As the book states, the main plot begins with top scientists from around the world attempting to commit suicide because “physics doesn’t exist.” Although it seems that their loss of faith will drive them to death, this is not the case in reality, as scientists would never commit suicide even if all their theories turned out to be wrong. They will conduct an experiment to debunk it. Anyway, both the Tencent and Netflix versions fix that flaw by hinting or showing that the giant countdown shown in their eyes is actually what drives them crazy and causes them to commit suicide out of fear. Trying to. It is also hinted that some of them will be killed by a pro-alien cult in the Netflix version.

Alien as a false god

Ye Wenjie (Rosalind Chao) and Mike Evans (Jonathan Pryce) established a pro-foreigner cult as a religious cult. As in the book and the Chinese TV version, they and their followers refer to the Santi, or Trisora, as “lords” in the book, but this is a misunderstanding. The Santi tribe has different ideas and opinions, as shown by the fact that the pacifists were the first to detect Ye Wen Jie’s radio signal, warning her not to reply, and revealing the location of Earth. They treat the aliens as a single entity, even though they are a race of individuals with May his people conquer the earth. Although this has already shown them to be aggressive, the cultists have chosen to believe that they will become the most benevolent colonizers ever seen in the history of the world. However, they have a faith that leads them to commit murder and betray the world. True believer Tatiana Haas (Marlo Kelly) is the most terrifying of the True Believers, willing to kill anyone for the alien cause if ordered, even those she cares about.

3 Body issues: Religious images abound

show runner DB Weiss, david benioff and Alexander Wu Religious imagery and symbolism is sprinkled throughout the series, with themes of religiosity becoming more prominent than in the original or Chinese adaptation. Mike Evans’ conversation with an invisible Santi over the radio in his office feels like a confessional. Ye Wenjie held a Buddhist funeral for her daughter in Oxford, with monks chanting mantras at the wake, but this is inaccurate given that her family were scientists and non-believers in China, and her daughter was also It is highly unlikely that he was a believer, but it is written in the script. I included this to add an underlying religious motif. Later, Ye and Jing Chen (Jess Hong) also burn incense at her daughter’s altar. Jin and Jack play a VR game in which the player’s character is an important pilgrim who aims to solve the mysteries of existence. Sophon (Shimooka Sea) often appears in VR games, descending like an angel bringing the proclamation of the Lord. In his final moments, Mike Evans is on his knees in penance, clutching a reading hard drive that resembles Mao Zedong’s Red Book. This speaks to the tragedy of his misplaced faith in the multilayered meaning of aliens. It suggests that the aliens are: A version of communism coming to destroy the world. Dying Will (alex sharp) becomes increasingly beautiful and saintly, and the moment when he confesses his love to Jing Chen and comforts her from the hospital bed looks like a religious tableau. After Ye Wen Jie rekindled the incense on her daughter’s altar, her last words to the aliens in her home were spoken while kneeling as if praying to them. It will be done. As she vows her rebellion, she discovers that the gods are actually demons.

Faith in science, science as faith

In the Chinese version, 3 Physical problemsWang Miao (edward chan) Faith in science keeps him going, but seeing the countdown and the wink of the universe triggers a major existential crisis until Da Shi ends (Yu Hewei) bring him back to Earth. Later, a research assistant at the observatory (played by popular Chinese comedian Gong Lian Shun) begs Wang Miao to tell her secret. Because he also wants to feel special and he wants to believe in this new thing. In the Chinese version, religion and blind faith are portrayed as negative aspects. This is consistent with the government’s anti-religious spirit.

In the Netflix version, 3 Physical problems, the Oxford Five are like the apostles of science. They don’t discuss or question science, but they use their scientific training to analyze problems and think through them rationally. Oggy (Eiza Gonzalez) is an engineer. One of the most respected physicists of his generation, Jin Cheng uses science to solve puzzles in his VR games and uses applied physics to design staircase projects. . Jack (john bradley) has used his scientific expertise to become the snack king. Will becomes a physics teacher in hopes of inspiring future generations of children. Saul (Jovan Adepo) uses his analytical skills to reason about how things are happening, often correctly, and uses scientific arguments to try to convince Will not to make sacrifices. In the story, these friends are true torchbearers, untroubled by the brokenness of science, and one by one they are called to action and embark on their own hero’s journeys. Spymaster Thomas Wade (Liam Cunningham) places his faith in them and uses them as weapons in his fight against the false god Santi.

original author of the book Liu Cixin Although not religious, this series expresses his belief in science.
