The update to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has received mixed reactions. The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) celebrated the renewal of her WIC program by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. However, the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the International Dairy Products Association (IDFA) expressed disappointment.
IFPA emphasizes that the finalized amendments will have a positive impact on nutrition security for vulnerable people. The organization emphasizes flexibility in food packaging and alignment with dietary guidelines, particularly promoting the availability of fruits and vegetables. IFPA believes this change will help improve health outcomes and ensure continued access to nutritious food.
Meanwhile, NMPF and IDFA have expressed concern about reduced access to dairy products due to the finalized rule. The group argues that the decision contradicts established nutritional science and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. NMPF and IDFA emphasize the importance of dairy products in providing essential nutrients and highlight that reducing dairy products may negatively impact participants’ nutrition and shopping experience.
