“The most important thing when it comes to nutrition is eating a balanced diet,” he says. Flow Neuschwander, adding in your best Neuschwander style, “So don’t eat trash!” So far it’s pretty simple. A good start for those who want to pay a little more attention to their diet. But top athletes need more than that. Especially if you live a vegan lifestyle, like Flor Neuschwander, who has been living without animal products since January 2020.

Read on to find out how he keeps himself energized and ready to tackle anything, whether it’s daily life or the next huge running challenge.

This is why Flo Neuschwander eats a vegan diet

“My wife has been vegan for many years,” says Flo, explaining why she changed her diet two years ago. “I looked at it for a while, and she said she was okay with not eating a few hamburgers instead of treating herself to one when we went out.”

The easiest way to eat healthy is to cook your own meals using fresh ingredients

Since then, Flo has overcome an incredible series of challenges that she has set herself. There’s his campaign “Run from Laufen to Laufen”According to him, he “bombed” 550 kilometers and more than 10,000 meters altitude in seven days.Rosfeld Marathon or his 100km world record on treadmill. All actions require huge amounts of energy and therefore optimal amounts of nutrients.

“This has been the best year ever for me, purely in terms of my sense of fitness and the challenges I’ve completed over the last few months,” Flo says. “I don’t know if it’s because of the vegan diet, but it doesn’t seem to hurt,” he laughed. In fact, he feels he has recovered fairly quickly and well since changing his diet. But he doesn’t want to convince anyone, Flo says. “It’s not my preference. But it works very well for me.”

I don’t know if it’s because of the vegan diet, but this year has been the best year ever for me in terms of my fitness and successful challenges.

This is what’s on the table in the Neuschwander family

  • breakfast: “For breakfast, I’ll have wholemeal bread with vegan butter, jam, or chocolate cream. Or soaked oatmeal with nuts, bananas, soy, almonds or oat yogurt.”

  • lunch: “For lunch, I usually just have gnocchi or a similar snack. Or maybe some bean yogurt with fruit and nuts. But I’m happy with white bread and avocado and tomato. I’m not very good at that. I don’t ask for it.” ”

  • dinner: “Evening is a fancy meal. My wife always makes it for me. The highlight right now is vegetable lasagna. The béchamel is made with cashew cream. I put vegan cheese on top and bake it.”

To get the protein I need after a hard run, I make myself some fat muesli with lots of nuts and soy yogurt.

This gives the flow the extra energy it needs.

Athletes who perform particularly well need a particularly effective diet before, during, and after competition. This is also confirmed by Dr. Stephen SmithPerformance nutritionist at the Athlete Performance Center in Thalgau.

“An athlete’s diet should definitely be tailored to the requirements of the sport,” explains the nutritionist. This applies both during training and during matches. Endurance athletes like Florian Neuschwander often train for longer at moderate intensity, Smith continues. “For these types of extensive training sessions, flow requires carbohydrates first and foremost.”

It is essential that an athlete’s diet is tailored to the demands of the sport

Dr. Stephen Smith, APC Thalgau, Performance Nutritionist

Flo Neuschwander gets the carbohydrates she needs from meals before and after competitions and training. During his workout, he covers his needs in other ways. “On long runs, like 100 kilometers on the treadmill, I drink a Red Bull especially towards the end when I notice my energy dropping,” Flo explains.

Now it’s your turn! Want to optimize your diet? Here are his top four tips from nutrition expert Dr. Stephen Smith.

  1. Choose real, fresh food. Shake-based meals and even supplements should be used selectively as needed and should not play a major role.

  2. Avoid diets that promise you the moon. For example, avoid diets that promise super-rapid weight loss or super-rapid muscle growth. Remember: a steady fall will wear out the stone.

  3. Eating healthy is a marathon, not a sprint. If you want to achieve not only your athletic goals, but also your nutritional goals, such as losing weight, building muscle, and becoming overall healthier, you need to invest time. It won’t work without it. We must think and act long-term.

  4. Please take your time and relax. Despite your consistency, you should regularly reward yourself for achieving intermediate goals. The 80/20 ratio is proven. 80% of his diet should consist of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and protein, and 20% can be pizza or other favorite foods.

Why do we care about running?

Of course, there are mental and physical benefits to putting on your trainers and stretching your legs, but the biggest benefit is the annual charity run. Wings for Life World Run, We are raising funds to support spinal cord research. Every year, millions of people around the world run for those who can’t. Register here for the May 5, 2024 run.
