Healthy Vision: Ayurvedic Tips

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, places great importance on maintaining healthy vision, as it is considered essential to overall well-being. , said Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu, Director, Basu Eye Hospital. (Image by Freepik)

Ayurveda for healthy eyes

“According to Ayurveda, the eyes are ruled by Pitta dosha, which is associated with the element of fire and is responsible for metabolic processes. To restore balance and enhance eye health, Ayurveda recommends a specific diet and lifestyle. We suggest adopting style habits,” says Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu. . He lists his 10 practices for healthy eyes:

1. Stay hydrated

Adequate hydration is essential to maintaining eye health. Drinking plenty of water and incorporating hydrating foods such as juicy fruits, vegetables, and herbal teas will help keep your body, including your eyes, well hydrated.

2. Choose foods that calm Pitta.

To balance Pitta dosha and support eye health, focus on consuming cooling and nourishing foods. Examples include cucumbers, coconut water, leafy greens, and sweet fruits such as grapes and melons.

3. Add ghee to your diet

Ghee, or clarified butter, is believed to be beneficial in moisturizing the eyes and improving vision. It is beneficial to incorporate a small amount of ghee into your daily diet by cooking or adding it to hot drinks. We recommend choosing pure grass-fed beef ghee.

4. Take herbal supplements

Certain herbs and herbal supplements are known to promote eye health. Triphala, a combination of three fruits, is rich in antioxidants and helps rejuvenate your eyes. Bilberry is another herb known to support healthy blood flow to the eyes and improve vision.

5. Do eye exercises

Like any other part of the body, the eyes also benefit from regular exercise. Simple eye exercises such as blinking, palming, and rolling your eyes can help relax your eye muscles, improve blood circulation, and reduce eye fatigue.

6. Maintain a good sleep cycle

Quality sleep is essential to rest and rejuvenate your eyes. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and create a sleep-friendly environment by avoiding screens at least an hour before bedtime.

7. Fighting pollution

It is important to protect your eyes from harsh environmental factors such as dust, smoke, and pollutants. Wearing sunglasses outdoors to block harmful UV rays and reduce glare, and using lubricating eye drops and Ayurvedic eye treatments can help cleanse and soothe your eyes.

8. Practice stress management

Stress can negatively impact eye health, causing symptoms such as dry eyes and eye strain. Incorporating stress-reducing habits like yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular physical activity can promote relaxation and overall well-being.

9. Maintaining hygiene

Good eye hygiene is essential to prevent infections and maintain healthy eyes. This includes washing your hands frequently, not touching or rubbing your eyes unnecessarily, and washing your glasses and contact lenses regularly.

10. Check with an expert

If you have persistent eye problems or vision changes, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist or Ayurvedic doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. Ayurveda offers special remedies such as Netra Tarpana (eye rejuvenation) and Netra Basti (eye purification therapy) to address various eye conditions.

keep eyes healthy

“By incorporating these Ayurvedic principles into your daily life, you can support healthy vision, prevent eye disease, and contribute to your overall well-being. To ensure eye health, pay attention to your body’s signals and adapt as necessary,” says Dr. Mandeep. Shin Bass.
